About the Author
Arthur Anton Skuratowicz, GJG, CGA, is a third-generation jeweler who developed his skills in his family's Chicago area store. After studying communications and drafting in college, Arthur attended the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), where he completed the Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Jeweler programs. Following his completion of GIA courses, Arthur became the first instructor hired to teach both gemology and manufacturing arts at GIA. A Certified Gemologist Appraiser, Arthur then went on to serve as a sales associate, jeweler, and appraiser at an American Gem Society retail firm. Julie Nash, GJG, ASA, grew up on a registered Hereford cattle ranch in the isolated high country of Colorado and became a silversmith during her senior year of high school. While attending college, Julie continued crafting sterling silver and gemstone jewelry, and her creations were featured at Saks Fifth Avenue in Palo Alto, California. After earning a B.A. in studio art at the Colorado College, Julie attended GIA, where she completed the Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Jeweler programs. In addition, she completed the Certified Gemologist Appraisal course at the American Society of Appraisers. After marrying in 1995, Arthur and Julie left their teaching positions at GIA and relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to get back into jewelry retail. In 1999 they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they started AntonNash LLC Appraisers and Consultants, an accredited gemological laboratory with the American Gem Society. Arthur serves as the consulting half of the company (he also teaches design as a contract instructor at GIA New York), while Julie spends the bulk of her time working one-on-one with jewelry consumers. Many of the concerns Arthur and Julie have encountered are addressed in this book.

This may not be the sexiest jewelry making book on the shelf, but for anyone who is inexperienced at working with gemstones, it'll surely pay for itself by saving you from inadvertently causing a workbench disaster. I have many excellent books on jewelry making, but none of them even briefly mentions the stone safeguarding information given in this book. Clear,terse explanations of safe techniques, as well as techniques to avoid and the reasons to avoid them for most of the gemstones you'll encounter on the bench make this a no brainer for anyone who isn't already an expert at stone setting and jewelry making. Highly recommended!
