Book Description

0313302278 978-0313302275 May 30, 1998
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students are on our campuses. They are either discovering their orientations while in our institutions or arriving with full clarity about their sexual identities. It is difficult to provide the attention these students need if we do not understand the issues or how to address them. This handbook is a guide to providing services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. It is for all faculty and administrators, especially those who may struggle personally with understanding non-heterosexual identities, who wish to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Non-heterosexual faculty and staff may also find this work useful as they attempt to discover themselves in academic and educational literature. Each section presents an area in which questions usually arise. Chapters within the sections dissect specific issues and, where appropriate, offer recommendations for change. Some of those areas include: identity development theories; residence halls; career planning; health and counseling centers; HIV/AIDS; students with disabilities; same-sex dating and domestic violence; athletics; fraternities; student leadership; speakers' bureaus and safe zone programs; commuter schools and church-related institutions; and Internet resources.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Recommended for the faculty, researchers, and practioners in secondary and higher education institutions.”–Choice

“...the material presented is very equitable in addressing the needs of all parts of the sexual minority population....In short, this is a fine reference work. I believe it will be a valuable addition to the literature in student life....this reference compilation not only should be in every college and university library collection, it should also be in Deans of Students' offices and available to all campus life professionals who support student needs....I recommend it highly.”–The Lesbian Review of Books

“I found the book an enlightening read and believe student affairs practicioners, researchers, faculty, and students will find the book extremely helpful and informative in their daily pursuits of eredicating homophobia and heterosexism and helping in the development of gay, lesbian,, bisexual, and transgender students....[T]he book will provide decision-makers a better and more informed framework in which to render their judgments.”–Journal of College Student Development

“This is a much needed and well done handbook which should be read by every university dean, instructor, and faculty advisor. The book does an outstanding job overall of raising issues and presenting possible solutions. LGBT students have not traditionally been served well by educational insitutions; these discussions are long overdue.”–Journal of Homosexuality

“[A]n invaluable and highly recommended resource....Following the advice given in Working with LGBT College Students should help to bring about a climate in which LGBT students can feel as welcome, enriched, anxiety-free, and safe in all aspects of their college experience as students who are secure in their heterosexual orientation.”–Reference & User Services Quarterly

“Sanlo's text is a valuable reference book for university faculty members, staff, and administrators who are looking for some assistance in the necessary work of reexamining LGBT student needs, including them in policies and curricula, and valuing them as full citizens of the university.”–NACADA Journal
