4.0 out of 5 stars Working with a Service Dog
This book is a useful "owner's manual" for handicapped people who have worked with one of the established training and placement agencies to acquire a trained service dog. It is full of information about the training received by the handicapped person at the training facility, on how to use and care for the the new dog, commands the dog may have been trained to obey, and...

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I was truly disappointed with this book
The authors address and dismiss owner-trained dogs in one sentence.
With over half the assistance dogs in America owner trained, I think it deserves at the very least a chapter.
It would behoove them to include the TEAMWORK books by Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelly as a reference.
There are so many people...

With over half the assistance dogs in America owner trained, I think it deserves at the very least a chapter.
It would behoove them to include the TEAMWORK books by Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelly as a reference.
There are so many people who can use a service dog and so few programs available that any book on the subject ought to include the possibility of independently training such a dog.
However this book would be a good gift for anyone with an aging service dog. It handles the loss of a dog with compassion.

1.0 out of 5 stars not very helpful, December 1, 2008

I bought this book because I am training my own service dog, but I found this book not helpful at all and quite redundant. I found "teamwork II" much more helpful.

It is full of information about the training received by the handicapped person at the training facility, on how to use and care for the the new dog, commands the dog may have been trained to obey, and even how to deal with the loss of the companion and helper of possibly many years.
This book will not be of as much use to those handicapped persons who are training their own service dogs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Service Dog Information, December 16, 2008

I was disappointed that there was not more specific information in how to train my own service dog. I was looking for a book on training and thought this was it. The book is more about how they help but also not in enough detail for what I need.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for those considering a program service dog for the first time, September 22, 2007

As a SD user I did not find this book particularly helpful. I think it would have been helpful to read before I got my SD, but after 18 months together we are a solid working team. The part on the death of the SD was the only thing that really meant anything to me, as I am yet to confront this. I found much of it to be brief and not offering anything new to me. It is certainly the best overall book I have read on SD, but it is really only geared to those who are obtaining a dog for the first time from a program.

5.0 out of 5 stars IT's about time!!! A++++ Book, September 13, 2007
This review is from: Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook (Paperback)
It is nice to see there is finally a book written for those of us that have trained our own dogs and always want to learn more! I am retiring my first service dog and beginning to train a new puppy and this book was VERY helpful! About a year ago I suffered a T11-12 spinal injury and I was not supposed to ever walk again. My Std. Poodle was already trained as we used him for educational purposes in schools etc. As I have trained dogs to do all kinds of tasks since I was a kid. So, I decided to use his tallents and I must say he really helped me get through a tough time. From the PTSD to learning to walk again etc. I have since found that I am much more at ease having my partner with me. It makes life so much better. As I also suffer from PTSD after the accident as well as depression and if it wasn't for him I know I would not have healed as fast as I did. Those of you out there that use service dogs know what I mean. They become such a big part of everyday life.

Service dogs do change lives!! Remember even if someone does not apear to be disabled they may have an invisable disability that causes them to need the dog... They are not always training one just because they LOOK ok.

This book was NEEDED to help people understand what these dogs can do and to give those that can the ability to teach their own dog. I also highly recomend Teamwork 1 and 2 they where a big help with task training as well.

God bless the Dogs and Partners out there!!! :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, May 9, 2010

I should have read the reviews before buying. Then I'd have known it wasn't for owner/trainers. They don't discourage owners training, but don't talk about it either with the exception of "it's difficult"
good info for someone looking to go through an organization, then again, the organiziation gives you that info for free when you go there. A waste of money for me & disappointed in this book.

Teamwork & Teamwork II were much better choices!

Its a vague waste of money. I learned more reading the ADA'S document sublets. It doesn't even tell specifics of what an airline Can Ask for, which is Nothing more then your vaccination records. Dont waste your money like I did.
