3.0 out of 5 stars The creative process
A good resource. I would have liked there to be a greater variety of writers and styles - but what is there is a good foundation for new and developing writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insight into how professional comic artists think, April 25, 2009
This review is from: Working Methods: Comic Creators Detail Their Storytelling And Artistic Processes (Paperback)
Length:: 0:15 Mins

The same script, when in the hands of different comic artists, are interpreted differently. With Working methods, author John Lowe has invited artists to interpret 3 scripts in this book, with an Q&A interview to look at their creative process.

The artists are Mark Schultz, Tim Levins, Jim Mahfood, Scott Hampton, Kelsey Shannon, Chris Brunner, Sean Murphy and Pat Quinn.

The artists talk about how they do compositions with respect to the script, finding and building reference materials, penciling, inking, lettering, and sometimes a little bit about their career in drawing. There's always something interesting to read about each artist. Such as Scott Hampton preference for printed reference over Internet reference because of resolution differences (but hey, there are lots of high res stuff out there today).

This book is recommended for comic artists looking to refine their storytelling techniques or searching for inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like the Books title says, July 10, 2009

I enjoyed this book very much. What is interesting is that although the artist's styles range from straight to cartoony, they all face the same storytelling issues. And that's what the majority of comics concern themselves with: storytelling.

Each artist gives a rundown on how he approaches the comic he has to draw, from the types of pencils and pens/brushes used to even, in some cases, the size of paper, down to the finishes. It's all very clear. If you can't be at the side of the artist when he creates the work, this is a great substitute.

I do have one quibble, despite a five star rating (for editorial content). For whatever reason, the publishers chose to present the question asked in a plain text and the artist's answers in italics which is inverse to how these things are usually presented. But that's a minor quibble (maybe it only bugs me). Otherwise, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

This book is an excellent way to see the creative process on how comic book writers and artists come up with ideas!

I have enjoyed the book quite a bit and reccomend it to anybody wanting to know more about the process in which comics are written and drawn!

Awesome book!

A must-read for wannabe comic book creators like me.

This book is exactly what the title says.

There are 3 scripts, each penciled by 2 or 3 different artists. There is also an interview with each artist about his Working Methods on that particular script and in general.

A great read, they should make more like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Working Methods Review, January 1, 2011

This is a short read, but a great one. TwoMorrows publishing is Fantastic! I would strongly recommend that you go to their website and look over all of the books that they offer. Working methods basically has 2-3 artist read the same script, and then, very much like a Journalist, Mike Manely asks each artist questions about his/her process. The book provides step by step visuals throughout each presentation. I like it because it is filled to the brim practical information and insight as to how the professionals do it. This is a good book. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for budding and professional artists, January 7, 2008
This review is from: Working Methods: Comic Creators Detail Their Storytelling And Artistic Processes (Paperback)
The book has a great help in understanding how other artists go about creating their work. I have always been very interested to know how artists have their setup in the studio, and he book has provided beautiful pictures of artist's desk and studio space. Besides, I thoroughly enjoyed samples of artwork that include concept drawings to finished art.

This book is very interesting. It also gives you a opportunity to draw from a script without seeing how the artist did it.
