5.0 out of 5 stars Working a collaborative musical effort, February 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Working (L.A. Theater Works Cast Recording of Complete 1999 Revised Version) (Audio CD)
Another classic effort by the Julliard trained Stephen Schwartz, among others, including James Taylor, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers, and Susan Birkenhad. Based on the Studs Terkel novel of the same name, the musical, Working, is a series of songs and monologues from working class and corporate america. It strives to show the innermost thoughts and opinions of the people that most just take for granted...The waitress, the telephone operator, the checkout girl. As well as others in the classic buisness envirement. The executive, the secratary. Some of the more notable songs would be " The Mason " about the simplicity of a man who lives to do one thing, " Just a housewife" her humble look at herself, " Its an art" a waitress's gypsy like aproach to her life. James Taylor's " Brother Trucker" fits the score very well. There's the right mixture of levity in the deeper monologues as well. You see the opinions of the Prostitute, the pride of the constriction worker, the quiet apathy of the mill-worker. The music is very typically Schwartz, with its mutiple part harmonies, and simplistic lyrics that do a lot to compliment the music behind it. All in all a superior effort by Stephen Schwartz and team. And well worth owning, especially if you enjoyed Godspell or Pippin.

Wait for the re-issue of the orginal broadway cast. This two-CD set comes from a live taping in Los Angeles put together by LA Theater Works. Pooorly indexed; contains much dialog, and does not even come with an index of tracks or any sort of a libretto.

I thought this cd is great. I love the music because it brings back good memories of when performed in this musical in high school. It also paints an excellent portrait of the working man.
