This book was written by the dog and as such it is difficult to determine if it was written for adults or children. I personally am looking for information that will help me train my dog for therapy work. The useful information provided in this book, in my opinion, could have been summed up in one chapter. The book is more experiences that the dog has than information about what can and cannot be done, what should and should not be done, and technical information regarding therapy work.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Covers Everything, May 2, 2003

In addition to being a charming story, as told by the Therapy Dog, Breeze, this book covered all of the questions that I still had about taking my dog into all sorts of different health care situations. No matter how well behaved your dog is, it helps to know all the basic "pet therapy" commands in order to keep the process uniform and safe. It would be wonderful to further the use of animals in health care facilities. They have such a magical way of bringing peace to the people who need it most. Anyone who has seen this miracle knows how important it is to encourage wide spread use of pets as therapy. With this book, we have an outline of what to do before, during and after a pet therapy session in order to show your pet in the best possible light. Hopefully, this will win over hospital and care facility administrators and relieve their apprehensions about allowing dogs in a hospital. Dogs and patients belong together and, although it's close, the patients benefit the most. This book is a must for anyone considering the most rewarding experience one can have...sharing your pet with people who are ill and alone. Brava!

A must read for anyone interested in people and pets!! Lorna Stanart stands out from the usual dog writer in giving a prospective of how animals nourish and bring out the happiness and love in people from the dog's eyes. Her book is not only a guide on how to become involved in people-pet therapy, but also a warm and loving look into the warmth dogs bring into the lives of the saddest and loneliest individuals; people who primarily relate through the senses rather than through the spoken word.
Although the patients are beseiged with medical disabilities, the book radiates such heartfelt love, one forgets about the sad and only remembers the glad. Everyone should give his child and friends this book. A+

1.0 out of 5 stars Unprofessional and Unhelpful, November 23, 2005
This review is from: Working as a Therapy Dog (Paperback)
From the title of this book, I was expecting there to be more information or tips for people who have dogs working as a therapy dog. As my dog has already been through therapy dog training and certification, the section on training/certifying your dog was not helpful to me, and anyway I could have found more information on this topic online, such as at [...] or other dog training websites.
The writing did not seem to have a professional feel to it, it was very short and not very interesting. The anecdotes were not interesting enough to justify the price of this book. I wish I had never bought it, was going to return it but it's even not worth the time or shipping cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Companionship as a healer, June 4, 2003

The love and companionship of my "best friend" Whitney,
a Golden Retriever has been the one who gave me the strength to
survive very serious episodes of severe depression. Many times,
very close to the point of suicide, I would look at her, realizing her love and need for me in her big, brown loving eyes.
She would ALWAYS be lying right beside me giving her unconditional love, never leaving me. Sharing this with others
is a beautiful thing, as shown in this book, and needed for anyone who is hospitalized or handicapped. It will bring a smile to the face of a child or adult to have the opportunity
to pet a dog, and feel the love each will give. This program
expresses the kindness and caring for others, and I plan to become involved in this program with my best friend, Whitney.

This is a sweet book on the life of a therapy dog from the dog's point of view. Good introduction but not much help in learning how to train one.

Enjoyed the book, makes you realize how patients enjoy being with a therapy dog when they cannot be with their own pets. Cute the way it was written from the dogs point of view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great AAT read ..., April 4, 2006
Having done animal assisted therapy work for six years now, I have to say this is an excellent and complete work on the subject. The author very subtlely gets across some key points in the therapy process. The importance of early training and socialization is emphasized. And the examples of how therapy dogs relate to the patients/clients are wonderful!!
