Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-10--The emphasis in these titles is on the role that individuals, especially young adults, can perform to mitigate these social ills. Axelrod examines some of the reasons that teens turn to suicide and outlines prevention strategies. In succeeding chapters, the author explains how telephone hotlines, community agencies, and institutions work to combat teen suicide and how volunteers fit into the picture. The emotional aftermath of suicide and tactics that can be employed to prevent further incidents in reaction are also addressed. Clayton presents sobering statistics linking substance abuse to many health and societal problems including teen suicide. In addition, he cites a continuing trend toward drugs and alcohol use at younger ages. The text continues with an analysis of various drugs and how they can cause addiction. Issues of how to stem the flow of illicit drugs and a brief look at related laws are included. The author provides ways for teens to locate drug and alcohol counselors as well as find appropriate programs within their communities. He highlights people and organizations that have had a positive effect and concludes with concrete ways in which teens can become involved and make a real difference in the war against addiction. Both books include personal testimonies and full-color and black-and-white photographs, and end with a series of discussion questions. The activist approach of these series entries as well as their currency make them more unique choices when adding to standard titles on these topics.
