Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up. The appeal of these two series titles is their colorful, attention-grabbing covers and their brevity. Addressing issues that are relevant to teens, each book introduces a problem and advises students on how to get involved. Klee focuses on the causes and possible cures for school violence, while Sherman concentrates on violence against women. Both authors introduce their topics by framing them within the context of our society. Next, actions being taken at the national, state, and local levels by both government and private agencies are explored. Finally, things that YAs can do to help themselves, a friend, their community, or the country are plainly stated. Readers are confronted with thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter. The black-and-white and full-color photos interspersed throughout the texts do not always support the content. For example, in School Violence, a caption that states that "Many teens are exposed to scenes of violence from television shows..." sits underneath a picture of two adolescents watching a program that is obviously not violent. However, these information-packed books will work well as hi/lo titles or as springboards to more challenging sources.?Marilyn Makowski, Greenwood High School, SC
