5.0 out of 5 stars Best combo formal/informal info ever
This is the book many women have been waiting for - it contains all of the thorough, up to date and accurate "doctor" information on surviving a working pregnancy AND all the information you'd get over coffee from your friends who've been through it - and their friends who've been through it (if you had time to go for (decaf) coffee!). 2.0 out of 5 stars There was nothing about this book that I enjoyed
This book was SO negative. There is a lot of information, very plain and to the point. It covers a LITTLE of everything, but didn't provide a lot of information on anything. I'm newly pregnant and working as a hardware technician for a large software company. What I took from this book is that I should hide my pregnancy as long as possible, kiss all of my co-workers...

It's really a helpful resource for any pregnant woman - working out of the home or not - because of the plethora of relevant and useful information. Great gift for expectant moms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Midwife says, "This book is terrific.", June 17, 2008
This book is terrific! The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book is a must buy for all new mothers, even those who don't work. As a mom and a nurse-midwife, I recommend it to everyone. I'm buying two copies for my daughter-in-laws.

The author covers everything from early pregnancy to labor and delivery to the postpartum period. What I like most are the practical tips for how to arrange your life, not after you go back to work, but before. The author, a woman OB/Gyn, and working mom, even discusses sex!

The index is helpful. The text is clear and easy to read. I loved the comments by real patients. Everything is explained intelligently but with common sense, and not in a scary way. I list this book, with four others, in my OB packet. It's a little expensive, but worth it. I love it.

This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
This book covers everything!!! It really emphasizes the importance of being aware of everything that could happen in pregnancy and labor. Dr. Greenfield presents the information in a conversational manner that does not scare the reader. I really feel that I benefited from reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes! Finally!, June 18, 2008
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
You known how sometimes when you read a novel you just skip down the page reading the conversation in quotes? I did the same thing with this one because the quotes from other working moms were so entertaining. They really flesh out the main points and also show the variety of normal experience. I also loved, loved, loved the first chapter--the quiz about "Are You (Even) Ready to Have a Baby". Lots of working women aren't sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and Realistic guide to pregnancy, June 18, 2008
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
Dr. Greenfield's book is a complete informative book that provides pertinent information and comfort to those women considering or experiencing pregnancy.
Her facts are accurate and reflect the latest "state-of-the-art" medical and technical knowledge.
She addresses issues about the human emotional element that are sometimes forgotten in books of this nature.
I highly recommend this book to all women of child-bearing age.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Praise for Working Woman's Pregnancy Book, February 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
I've looked at many books at the bookstore and purchased several to see which books provide most pertinent information for working, modern women as they adapt to pregnancy. This book by far offers some of the most relevant, best organized, practical information that I can refer to through each stage of my pregnancy. The anecdotes by other women help you relate to as well as learn from experiences of other women that go through similar dilemmans and challenges in balancing work and life responsibilities during pregnancy. It graciously leaves out some of the very basic information that most women can gain information by simply going to the American Pregnancy Association website (such as basics of nutrition, what is safe/unsafe, vitamins, common discomforts) and sticks to providing you the extra information that actually required further research and data compiliation by the author. It also further offers post-birth tips (i.e. on breast feeding and pumping milk once you return to work, etc.) that will make this book a solid reference guide even after the baby is born. So glad I found this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice for Working Moms, October 2, 2008
By
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
If you are mom-to-be on the job this book is must have! What Greenfield has done is skillfully weave a complete pregnancy, birth, and postpartum guide with all the tricks of the trade working moms want to know for how to successfully combine career and pregnancy. In addition to very well written sections on prenatal health info, readers will also learn how to handle such issues as maternity clothing choices, spreading the good news to coworkers, and dealing with backache while at work. Especially helpful are sections dealing with job rights for pregnant women, how to negotiate a maternity leave (and what current law says about maternity leave), and tips for breastfeeding at work. Greenfield also includes numerous quotes from real working women about how they survived pregnancy. She includes interviews with women from many different walks of life -- from a Fed Ex delivery driver to former Governor of Massachusetts Jane Swift! I have to say, as a former resident of Massachusetts, I was fascinated by how honest Swift was about her experiences while pregnant with twins -- and serving as Lt. Governor. It made for captivating reading. All these first person stories add to the book's chatty, warm tone.

2.0 out of 5 stars There was nothing about this book that I enjoyed, December 30, 2009
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
This book was SO negative. There is a lot of information, very plain and to the point. It covers a LITTLE of everything, but didn't provide a lot of information on anything. I'm newly pregnant and working as a hardware technician for a large software company. What I took from this book is that I should hide my pregnancy as long as possible, kiss all of my co-workers hind ends so that they don't get mad when I take maternity leave, and hope that nobody treats me any differently. It was horrible advice. Being pregnant is wonderful, and you shouldn't be so concerned about someone at work not understanding. If you are looking for a boring list of things you can and can't do - along with what kinds of thing MIGHT happen (which I already found all over the internet for free) - this is your book. I'm going to look for something a little less depressing and a little more upbeat.

By the way, I had to tell my boss and co-workers early because of morning sickness... and they are all estatic and very understanding. My boss is a male - but was very professional about the whole thing. I'm glad I told them.

1.0 out of 5 stars a bunch of fluff, August 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
I was really disappointed with this book. I kept reading thinking it would get to some actually helpful advice based on more than random quotes from surveyed women. too much emphasis on being safe in the workplace- I'd hope any woman working in a lab would figure that out. it also ended up as more of a regular pregnancy book walking the reader through the entire pregnancy. I don't need that and can get that from another book. I didn't get the impression that this woman had actually gone back to a job and figured out anything more than logical, practical sense stuff. what had sold me was the discussion of when to tell your boss... all it ended up walking you through are some of the things to think about like a) whether it will impact your work b/c you have a physical job, b) if you tell anyone other than your boss first that your boss may find out anyway, that c) some people like to give as much advanced notice as possible so that your employer can plan maternity leave. I can think about that all on my own - I want to know what will help me re-integrate after maternity leave, and what will ensure I'm still on an advancing career path when I do. Bottom line.. underwhelmed and hoping I motivate to resell it because I don't want it on my bookshelf. as a side note, thankfully I'd also purchased another career mom book and was very pleased. go check out this one instead: Mothers on the Fast Track: How a New Generation Can Balance Family and Careers,

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic source of information, June 16, 2008
By
This review is from: The Working Woman's Pregnancy Book (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) (Paperback)
This book is very well done. It reads like a conversation that every pregnant woman would hope to have with her OB/GYN...while the title may lead you to belive it's only about being pregnant in the workplace, it is actually much more broad than that and covers all aspects of pregnancy from pre-conception to after delivery. An excellent resource.
