Who knew that a computer dope like me could make dynamic websites?, December 23, 2008
This review is from: Working With Yahoo! Pipes, No Programming Required (Paperback)
Pipes are soo cool!
Okay, so now I sound like a total geek ("three more missions and I get my Spock ears!"). Don't let the cover of this book scare you. Pipes are just what they sound like. I find something on YOUR website and I get it to appear on MINE! This should be illegal! :-)
Here's how I see it: As an author I have always wondered how webpages take the info from Amazon and put it on their page. It seems like a lot of work to hand code all of this, and I just couldn't imagine a "silver bullet" software that magically got my book's current ranking, title, cover image and reviews (and a handful of sunshine and rainbows while they were at it) from Amazon.com and put it on THEIR site.
But here's the part that is seriously freaking me out. After reading this book, I actually "get it." I understand what this guy is talking about. The visuals really help. When the author said "no programming necessary" I laughed out loud--yeah, right!
Okay, so I am not laughing now. I am honestly excited about this. I feel that I can go to Yahoo and do all of this stuff for free and start bringing in fresh new content for MY book's websites, fun and interesting news feeds, games, even a stock purchase plan, just for laughs. I am still a little questionable about the stock "buy and sell" part, but it seems that my website can possibly become smarter than I am, pulling data directly from the exchange and reaching into my wallet and making transactions on an "IF (the stock is this price) THEN (sell! sell!)" scenario. Again, what is scary is that I am really starting to believe that I can actually DO this. I am going to read this book again, and this time I am going to try everything (not just the exercises), and see if I can create a monster website that takes over the world. Other than a new title for this book (a friendlier one), the only thing I suggest is that every self-published author seriously gets their hand on a copy of this book and starts making their websites a-mazing. Okay thanks for reading. I am off to read this book again.

You can get the same info on the web as you can find in this book, June 22, 2009
This review is from: Working With Yahoo! Pipes, No Programming Required (Paperback)
This is a nice book but you can find all the same info on the web with out having to buy this book. Just do a search on the topic and you will find more info than what's in this book. The book is pretty then for the cost. I would just research the web and save my money.
