Book Description

Part of the College Seminars Series. As a result of Modernising Medical Careers, the establishment of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) and other drivers for change there are significant and unprecedented developments underway in the education and assessment of doctors in training in the UK. The establishment of a new unified training grade in medical specialties and introduction of a new competency-based curriculum in psychiatry go hand-in-hand with changes in the way trainees skills are assessed. The key emphasis is to focus on outcome as reflected by the performance of the doctor. Thus, far more teaching, learning and assessment will occur in the workplace in real clinical time and situations. This book outlines the workplace-based assessments that will accompany the new curriculum and that will feed into a new purpose-designed assessment and examination schedule. The authors explore the theory and practice of assessment methods such as case-based discussions, long-case and short-case evaluations, patient satisfaction, directly observed practice, changes in MRCPsych examinations and multi-source feedback. The rating schedules being piloted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists are included as an appendix.
