Book Description

July 1, 2009
Flip-flops, iPods, MySpace, "Dude," Instant Messaging.

Whatever happened to dress shoes, sir/ma'am, in-person meetings, and traditional work etiquette?

A workplace revolution is underway, one that is stimulating new methods of thinking, behaving, communicating, and doing business as Generation Y continues to infiltrate the workplace and influence corporate culture. This revolution is lead by approximately 60 million Gen Yers, the largest bloc to hit the workforce since the 72 million baby boomers. Company owners and managers are worried, because this generation has created its own unique culture...and demands.

Y in the Workplace illustrates how the values, attitudes, and expectations of Generation Y have had an impact on corporate environments, intergenerational functioning, and management strategies. To help this generation successfully transition into the workplace while creating a shared vision, authors Lipkin and Perrymore provide you, the manager, with the following:

* Psychological insight into the character of this generation.
* Strengths and challenges that Generation Y is bringing to the workplace.
* Coaching strategies and ways to harness their strengths, minimize their weaknesses, and illuminate their talents.
* Hope about their abilities as supervisors and managers, and about their positive impact on the future of your company.

Whether you are a small business owner, manager, HR professional, or teacher working with Generation Y, this book is a must-read to gain insight into why this generation is the way it is, how to help them become the best they can be, and how to integrate them into your company and work with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and practical!! September 9, 2009
Format:Paperback
Y in the Workplace is an essential tool for anyone seeking to better understand the not-insignificant idiosyncrasies of the Y-Generation. The authors' (April Perrymore and Nicole Lipkin) use of extensive research combined with humor and insight make this book a must for managers, would-be managers, professors, or even parents seeking to better understand and connect with their twenty-somethings. Additionally, the authors' backgrounds in Clinical Psychology add a level of depth to their observations that is invaluable in understanding what motivates (and perhaps more importantly de-motivates) this intriguing generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars insightful September 9, 2009
Format:Paperback
I picked up this book not really knowing what to expect; I am technically a Gen 'X'er, but right on the cusp of Gen 'Y'. To my surprise, I didn't find myself choosing sides, attacking a mindset or defending one. The authors did a great job explaining the reasons for the differences in these two generations and how we can understand each and use both to our advantage professionally and personally.
Being an employer of a few Gen 'Y'ers and with a little one entering the world, this book not only helped me in business, it helped me personally. By examining what may have caused these personality traits found in many Gen 'Y'ers, I am much more aware of the affects of certain parenting skills that have become so common over the past 20 years and how they've molded young adults today.
This book is appropriate for everyone, including managers, business owners, and parents who want to learn from previous generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gen Y's powerful gift October 8, 2009
Format:Paperback
One of the most poignant messages that came across in this book is the point that this generation's gift is their desire to help others, their acceptance of diversity, and their environmental concern. This quote from the book says it best, "Gen Y not only embraces differences, they tend to motivate and expect others to do the same."
For as much as we may poke fun at Gen Y, this excellent book informs us that these words ring true and are a very powerful contribution.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not very practical October 3, 2012
By C. King
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book give a great discussion about Gen Y workers and some of their personality traits. However the coaching examples are not practical or realistic. Most of the examples are suited for businesses that are not technical in nature. The take-away that I got was that, as the owner of an engineering firm, I have little use for the Gen Y'ers until they grow up. Their work ethic, attitudes, and habits can get me sued for sloppy engineering details.

This was an excellent book. Very applicable to managers/supervisors or counselors working with Gen Y's. Many books speak to the issues (good/bad) with Gen Y's, but few discuss how to connect, interpret, motivate and maximize the effectiveness of Gen Y's. The book is the best I have looked at in that regard. There is strong substance, research and practical examples of the key points. I bought the book for a general staff study project to better support our Gen Y's and was not disappointed. The members of our group all felt the book was excellent. Well done.....highly recommend and an easy read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Y me? September 8, 2009
Format:Paperback
Excellent work. This book was so helpful in helping to get in the minds of Generation Y. I enjoyed the positive spin these authors put on this Generation as everything has its pluses and minuses.

We have to learn to manage these "kids" as they are the future. As the authors pointed out, there is a lot they can teach us and it's important to collaborate and lead rather than manage.

I recommend this to anyone trying to understand what the workforce is coming to

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful August 26, 2009
Format:Paperback
I am a career counselor and I have found it very useful in my work with young people. This is a very good tool not just to understand them, but also to prepare them for the challenges of the careers they are building. It has helped me to know better their perspective and real needs in this challenging and very important process they are involved in. Definitely worth it to read, it gives you lots to think about.
