A long neglected poet of high quality, November 21, 2011
This review is from: The Works of John Clare (Poetry Library) (Paperback)
John Clare is a poet long neglected who in recent years has been given much attention and gained considerable recognition. He is a poet who comes from the peasantry and has a sure grasp of the world of nature. His poetry often contains descriptions of the world of rural England. But he is also a psychologically complex poet whose most famous poem 'I am' speaks about his not being understood even by those he loves, and his desire for a kind of peace and calm in isolation. His ability to describe his own complex feelings is outstanding. His language is clear and strong, and he is a very accessible poet. He ended his life in an asylum where he wrote his most powerful poetry, a poetry far more interesting than the simple poetry of his early years.
It is always wonderful to discover a new poet of quality. This is the feeling I had when reading his poems.
