Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Unlike the people of ancient days who knew of saints only through their legends, icons and reliquaries, we in the 20th century have the ability to know modern saints through more technological forms. Over a four-year period, Collopy documented with photography Mother Teresa, the Missionaries of Charity and those persons throughout the world to whom the missionaries have ministered. The majority of the pages of the book is comprised of photos, many stunning, but also included are commentary by Collopy, quotes, letters and spiritual counsel by Mother Teresa and the daily prayers of the Missionaries of Charity. Anyone whose life has been affected by Mother Teresa's work will enjoy this book.

Collopy's volume on Mother Teresa is a spiritual journey even for the atheist. The compassion, humility and love that was Mother Teresa and lives on in the work of her Sisters is caringly portrayed in Michael Collopy's book. You see a rare side of Mother Teresa whose warm smile could light up a room. Collopy adds a tremendous dimension with his own recollections of speciifc instances noted in his photogrpahs. His own spiritual depth and the impact that Mother Teresa had on his life is apparent.

This is the best book on Mother Teresa. The convents for the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa's religious order) all have this book. I work with the Sisters feeding the poor and purchase copies through Amazon to give to the co-workers (volunteers) of the Missionaries of Charity. This book shows photos of the Missionaries of Charity's work around the world, and wonderful quotes and prayers from Mother Teresa.

This book is done by a photographer who worked with the Missionaries of Charity in San Francisco for a couple of years before beginning to document their work and lives with photographs. It also includes their prayer book--with permission from Mother Teresa. She was reluctant to be photographed, at first. Michael Collopy says that though the photographs in his book were taken over a period of ten years, they "offer merely a glimpse into the life of this multi-faceted religious community and the people they love and serve".
There are 190 pages of pictures. Many of these pages have two pictures. Each picture is fascinating and moving. It is a book that you can turn to many times and study the persons in them. Though the work the sisters do is with people who are near death and all are very poor, there are joyful pictures as well.

This book eloquently shares the depth of humanity through poignant words and moving photography. This is a gorgeous coffee table book that will elicit meaningful conversation, dialogue, and introspection. I actually used it in grad school when I wrote a research paper on Mother Teresa and got some terrific quotes from it. Mother Teresa's life and wisdom inspire me to reflect on what really matters in the grand scheme of the world, and how that ought to impact the way I live my life, devote my time, and spend my resources.

Scanning through the pages of this book, one can not help but wonder and be moved by the life and conviction of Mother Teresa. Undoubtedly, Mother Teresa is one of God's finest gifts to world: her words, her actions, her faith -- all is but a drop in the ocean of God's unfathomable love. Her joy in serving the poorest of the poor is a reflection that she saw Christ in everyone, without judgement. Michael Collopy has captured the essence of Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity.

This book has some of the most beautiful photos of Mother Teresa. I learned so much about her by just thumbing through it. It made me want learn more about her and I could not resist going directly home from the local library and buying on Amazon. The words and the photos are all great. If you want to learn about becoming a better person, look at some of the life of one of those who lived best!
