The "other" Liszt!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Works for Organ 2 (Audio CD)
Liszt is well known for his brilliant piano music, especially his concertos. The music he wrote for other instruments: organ, orechestra, voice, etc., is much less known. Even the majority of Liszt's fans are not familiar with his non-piano work. This was my personal case: though a long-time admirer of his concertos and other flamboyant piano pieces, I was not aware of his orchestral and church music, and it was only very recently that I came to know about the important amount of this other side of Liszt's work, and started getting familiar with it through purchase of various CDs, since it is almost impossible to hear it on the radio or in concert halls.
The present CD is one of the examples of the "other" Liszt! It is volume 2 of his organ work recordred by Naxos. The 5 pieces on the CD vary in length and mood, but are all powerful and haunting, as organ music usually is. Piano and organ have one important thing in common: a key board, though each one is quite different from the other. However, interrestingly, one finds at times certain similarity in the music writing of Liszt for each instrument. If you are interrested in getting acquainted with Liszt's non-piano music, this CD would be a good buy. |
