Growing up and going to school in Sydney, Australia, I was very familiar with the poems of Andrew Barton ("Banjo") Paterson, the most famous of Australia's bush poets. I learned many of them by heart, even the long epic poems, such as "The Man From Snowy River," and I can still recite them 60 years later. American moviegoers will probably remember a great movie made from "The Man from Snowy River," and will enjoy many of the other poems in this volume.

I made this purchase as a gift for a Canadian friend to reciprocate for her gift to me of "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service.

Among my favorite poems of his are The Man from Snowy River, which was made into a movie, starring Kirk Douglas playing both parts of twin brothers, one a good guy and one not so good. The classic words to Waltzing Matilda, perhaps the most recognizable Aussie song, and a host of other memorable and not-so-memorable poems are included. But this small book has only a portion of the epic works of Banjo Paterson; arguably they are the best of the best of his work. I have recently driven the Road to Bendigo, and Paterson's work is evident the entire way.

I started this book of poems for National Poetry Month and have long since been a fan of Banjo's poem "The Man from Snowy River." Overall, the poems are enjoyable and a great example of ballads that express life on the Australia frontier in the late 19th century. That being said, the subject matter can get repetitive. I'm sure I will pick up this collection again at some point in the future, but when I do, I will read a poem a day rather than trying to read them all in a week or so.

It took me far too long to discover this poet. I grew up with Robert Service, and Rudyard Kipling, and I don't know why I had never seen anything but Waltzing Matilda from this Australian jewel in the rough. I'm deeply enjoying the poems and ballads collected here, and if you like the frontier spirit, the rough men with eharts of gold, the derring-do, and horses, you will enjoy this as well.
