4.0 out of 5 stars Norgard's "Echo Zone" is an impressive work December 9, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It may not be terribly helpful to a general readership to review only one piece on this disc, but I'd like to tell fans of Per Norgard what they are missing. For some years the composer had been thinking of a stereophonic work for two percussionists situated at opposite sites of the stage, and the interest the Safri Duo showed in his music helped him realize this dream.

The resulting piece is the three movement "Echo Zone" (1993). The first movement "Resonances" is scored mainly for pitched percussion, with slowly resonating metallic and wood tones. The second movement, "Repercussion", is the most substantial. Here Norgard presents a musical narrative of two lines that are completely independent and distinct, but locked together as tightly as the teeth in a zipper. Norgard's entire aesthetic is based on "inteference", or the phenomenon of trying to separate out individual musical building blocks from the whole, and here the challenge on the listener is made even greater by the focus of one's hearing constant shifting from left ear to right ear and back. Who would have thought that stereo sound could still be used to fresh effect in the 1990s? It's all quite a head trip, and a lot of fun. The brief third movement, "Reminders", begins as a synthesis of the first two movements, but then swiftly brings the work to a close with a thrilling example of Norgard's "endless accelerando" technique scored for two percussionists.

"Echo Zone" was to be only the first of Norgard's collaborations with the Safri Duo, though it ultimately seems the most impressive. His second work for them was the Bach setting "The Well-Tempered Percussionists" (available on
