Comment: NOT a former library item, NOR a promo or "cut-out"! Bought new/sealed and only played a couple times. CD is in very good condition! Booklet & rear insert are both "like new." Just some minimal wear on the CD jewel-case. This is an all-around excellent copy from my personal collection, stored in a non-smoking home.

Editorial Reviews

This is Volume 1 in a new series devoted to the Works for Solo Piano by Johannes Brahms, starting with a selection of highly personal collections of Capriccios, Intermezzi, Ballades, a Romance, and Rhapsodies. The series also marks the first major project of the internationally acclaimed pianist Barry Douglas as an exclusive Chandos artist. Since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, Douglas has established a major international career, and his reputation as a pianist and conductor continues to grow. Douglas was the soloist in the 2011 recording of Nino Rota's Concerto soir‚e (CHAN 10669), of which International Piano said: 'For pianophiles, the headline message is undoubtedly "Barry's back". A complete Brahms series beckons, for which this definitely whets the appetite.'

Classical weight and Romantic melancholy, relieved by lighter moments akin to Impressionism and the Rococo. An absolutely gorgeous recording filled with expressive nuances. Barry Douglas has been my favorite pianist since I heard him play the Brahms First Concerto and Piano Quintet one summer night in Baltimore. Listening to him play Brahms is like listening to Maria Callas sing Bellini or Donizetti. I can't wait for more of his complete Brahms piano solos.

Format: Audio CD
In the mid 1980s as I began studying classical piano, I gravitated more and more to Brahms solo piano pieces as he became my favorite (followed by Chopin and Schubert). At that time, I was fortunate to come across fantastic piano recordings by Radu Lupu, Zoltan Kocsis, Rudolf Firkusny, Lydia Artymiw, and my favorite interpreter of Brahms Stephen Kovacevich.

As I re-discovered these treasures, ripping these CDs on my iTunes, I decided to investigate a more recent recording and I read positive reviews of Barry Douglas’ performances put on two volumes. I decided to give Douglas a try and I was surprised at how bright, passionate, expressive, and unique his interpretations are. For a fan of Brahms’ solo piano, I find these a necessary addition to any collection. I have been truly surprised at how different and soulful these pieces are, complete with their own phrasing, unique from Kovacevich’s.

Kovacevich is no longer my number one Brahms player. He is now tied with Douglas. Highly recommended. Please get both volumes.
