An American classic,
By Dr. Darryl Taylor, African American Art Song ... (Cedar Falls, IA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Works By William Grant Still (Audio CD)
This seminal recording is a must for the library of anyone serious in the study of American music. William Grant Still, often lauded as the "Dean of African American Composers," is among the most distinguished composers in the United States, regardless of his race. This anthology of his work explores his contribution to small scale genres, namely chamber music and song. Having been deeply enamored of the human voice, his music is imbued with lyricism for every instrument. In this recording, Robert Honeysucker is a stand-out performer. His rich, vibrant baritone is perfectly suited to the rigourous requirements of Still's "Songs of Separation." Lynn Chang and Vivian Taylor perform Still's "Suite for Violin and Piano" with style and panache. The pathos and passion of Still's life can be discerned from the second movement of this work, in particularly.

I had not heard of this composer. I am very happy to have the chance to hear his work. I don't have any special training in classical music, but I can tell you I liked what I heard.
