William Paley (1743-1805) was the most successful theological author of the late eighteenth century. His principal writings, reprinted many times during his lifetime and throughout the nineteenth century, included works on moral and political philosophy, the evidences of Christianity and natural theology. These, together with his sermons, represent a complete system of divinity.
Influenced by Locke, Edmund Law and Abraham Tucker, Paley prized his intellectual independence and his positions on various topics are often strikingly original. Altogether, his writings display the vitality and comprehensiveness of liberal Anglican divinity in the late eighteenth century. His later sermons, included here, discuss topics not treated elsewhere in his writings, including weakness of will, the need of conversion, the influence of the Spirit, and efficacy of Christ's death. The clarity and persuasiveness of his arguments, a feature of his writing that many, including Darwin, greatly admired, make him still well worth reading.
This reprint is of the second and best edition of Paley's works and includes a volume of biography and miscellany. Rarely found, even in major libraries, this set will be a valuable addition to any collection.
