Book Description

December 1, 2002 ICA series

Increasingly, people working in teams face complex issues that need resolving in an efficient, participatory manner that honors the group’s diverse perspectives and individual creativity. The Workshop Book outlines the best practices of the workshop method, based on the Institute for Cultural Affair’s Technology of Participation,™ and its use in consensus formation, planning, problem solving, and research. It also discusses workshop preparation and design, leadership styles, dealing with difficult behaviors, and special applications such as its use in large groups and for planning purposes.

R. Brian Stanfield is the Director of Publications at the Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs and author of the companion volume, The Art of Focused Conversation, and The Courage to Lead (New Society Publishers).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Facilitative Knowledge, February 22, 2005
By
Les Lauber (Lawrence, KS USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Workshop Book: From Individual Creativity to Group Action (ICA series) (Paperback)
I grabbed this book immediately when I saw it. I have been using the facilitation models from its companion piece, "The Art of Focused Conversation," for nearly four years with outstanding results. I knew this book would provide me with similar benefits.

Focused on moving from discussion to action, this book describes the "Consensus Workshop." This method for captures the perceptions of employees, allows them to process their multiple perceptions, moves them to decisions, and awakens the passion in employees necessary to achieve goals. It is broken into four partes: The Method, The Finer Points, Leading Workshops, and Workshop Applications.

The method itself (Part 1) is straightforward, and enough to get the reader off and running in the first 49 pages. However, the richness of the explanations found in Part 2 helps the reader understand why the method can be so powerful. Part 3 is invaluable because its suggestions (say, dealing with difficult behaviors in a group, or developing your style) apply to so many contexts outside this specific technique. Part 3 alone is worth the price of the book for anyone who facilitates groups. Part 4 lists applications, both for working meetings through a series and adapting the method for groups from 1 to 100+.

I like this book a great deal. As a stand-alone book, it provides the reader with enough tools and techniques to successfully facilitate groups to consensus and action. As a companion piece to "The Art of Focused Conversation" its power increases exponentially. It will benefit anyone who has to lead a group or team through discussions to action.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Almost" to Group Action, November 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Workshop Book: From Individual Creativity to Group Action (ICA series) (Paperback)
The book does a good job describing the process of using the Workshop Method with groups and even an individual use. It also explains how to set it up. The thing missing was how to take the information the group discovers from the workshop method and move into some sort of action. I wish the book had an additional chapter that helped with that. I would have given the book a four star rating except the title implies that it deals with the action step and I felt it was missing. But if someone is wanting a book that explains how to prepare for and do the workshop method this book is very good.
