5.0 out of 5 stars A step back into time
This book opens up a world which would otherwise have been totally lost. 108 years after the year 1900, I was able to see the world as it existed then, in colour!!

The sight of bedouins armed with muskets, passengers offloading from ferries, city views from around the world - its all in there. I saw the back cover and knew that I had to own this fine book...

3.0 out of 5 stars A few pictures per country
This a basically a bunch of colorized black and white pictures organised by country. A lot of different countries are represented, even Singapore. The problem with the book is that many of the pictures are not that interesting. This is no doubt the case because we only get a few pictures from each country. You feel like seeing more pictures from countries that you are...

3.0 out of 5 stars not color photos, March 26, 2009

Photochromes are tinted B&W pics, not color pics. They're pretty, but they're not the same.

Now I have 2 items from 1900 - this book and a Obie 1900 Mauser Rifle. I cant wait to catch hold of some more things from the amazing 1900s.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for the pictures, not for the text., July 21, 2008

This review is from: The World in 1900: A Colour Portrait (Paperback)
The 300 reproductions of photochromes from the turn of the 20th century are excellent and well worth the price of the book. The accompanying text is unreliable. E.g. the authors make up a cock and bull story about Orell Füssli, supposedly a talentend enthusiast who fiddled for decades before perfecting the photochrome process at the end of the 19th century. The truth is that Orell Füssli did invent the process, but Orell Füssli is the name of a Swiss printing company established under that name in the 18th century (and with predecessors going back to the 16th century).
