This review is from: World Is Africa (Audio CD)
"World is Africa" is a savory, varied compilation of African music, from Ethiopian jazz to the stirring vocals of late South African diva Miriam Makeba. What makes it distinctive is that there are plenty of instrumentals. There are well-known singers like Mali's Amadou and Mariam, Wasis Diop, and Salif Keita. "World is Africa" is like a heady Kenyan coffee, or sweet chocolate from Sierra Leone.

"World is Africa" opens with the synth Afropop of Amadou and Mariam,a now-married couple who met at a Malian school for the blind. Daby Toure (who once belonged to the legendary Toure Kunda) has the disco-flavored "Bibou." There's Ethiopian jazz from the Alem-Girma Band and Feqadu Amde-Mesqel. Bassekou Kouyate and Dirck Westervelt have a ngoni/banjo duet covering a traditional Appalachian folk song. Wasis Diop covers the Talking Heads' "Once in a lifetime" with a tribal beat. Senegalese rapper Sen Kumpe addresses political corruption. There are luminous vocals from South African singer-songwriter Vusi Mahlasela and the late diva Miriam Makeba.

"World is Africa" is a fascinating, varied compilation. For every copy sold,a dollar is contributed to Project RED in combating HIV/AIDS in Africa. Music brings healing.
