This is an extremely handy reference to have in the house, and I buy the new annual World Almanac each year. The amazon.com price and delivery service can't be beat!

This contains information that is difficult to find using google, and its logical arrangement of categories makes it fairly east to find many things. It is also fun to skim through simply to be amazed or to learn something. I grew up in an era when home computers and google didn't exist, and I have always appreciated the element that a printed book brings to a research project.

I have used the almanac for many, many years and found it an excellent reference book. This year I tried the Kindle version and was very surprised to find that the search function was for location and not for page number. This makes it very dificult to find the desired information by using the index,
I recommend that if one wants to use this as a reference book, that they use the printed edition. I have ordered a print edition.

I have loved almanacs ever since my grandmother gave me a Reader's Digest almanac for Christmas in the year that I learned to read. It was the first book that I owned. I have gotten one every year since (and nowadays more than one, since I get a copy for the office too).

There are many imitators on the market, some of them quite good, but The World Almanac has set the standard for more than a century. The New York World newspaper began publishing an almanac in 1868, "a 120-page volume with 12 pages of advertising." The newspaper suspended the almanac's publication in 1876, but publisher Joseph Pulitzer revived it in 1886 as a "compendium of universal knowledge." The almanac has been published annually since, outliving the newspaper whose name it still bears. (The World Almanac is not the oldest almanac in publication, though: that distinction belongs to The Old Farmer's Almanac, which is "North America's oldest continuously published periodical," founded in 1792.)

The World Almanac contains much useful information that belongs in any serious basic-reference set. For the world, the almanac presents basic statistics about each nation, and about the world's major religions; and summarizes world history, with more detailed histories of the United States and of the preceding year. For the United States, the almanac reprints the nation's organic documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution; contains a directory of the entire Federal government; presents basic statistics about each state and major city, and a short biography of each president; and much more. The almanac also contains bountiful information about education, science, sports, and many other topics.

Quick -- what's the population of the Seychelles? For that matter, where ARE the Seychelles? What's the minimum legal age of driving in Utah? Does Norway use the Euro? What picture won the Academy Award for 1952? Yes, you can answer these questions well enough with your computer (assuming you've spelled "Seychelles" correctly) but what if the power goes out? Even if you've gargled your Google and bungled your Bing, the new WORLD ALMANAC AND BOOK OF FACTS FOR 2014 stands ready to help at all times. It's no surprise that entry-level college Journalism courses still include this perennial and easy-to-use reference work on their required-reading lists. Additional color photos for the 2014 volume are a plus. Well worth the price, even without a discount.

Format: Paperback
"World Almanac and Book of Facts 2014" is the updated edition of the popular reference book full of useful information, the best-selling reference book of all time that is published annually since 1868.

Readers which are familiar with previous editions will know the value of this extensive guide to history which provides information on various aspects of human activity and entertainment, including politics, economics, geography, music, science, sports and others.
The guide does not go deep into the details, but it is more designed for quick search of basic information providing large number of facts contained on its pages sorted by clear and easily searchable criteria.

So if you need to know what was the population of a certain year, who was nominated in some elections, who won and who lost the elections, if you search for some company or want to know who won the 100m race at the Olympics, all such information you will find inside.
World Almanac can be read by all generations, and it is difficult to define which the minimum reader's age is in order to be able to use it.
Still I believe that it can already be useful to children in elementary school, as a starting point for getting some basic information before the investigation can be continued in other books or on the Internet.

The book is written in a style and language that enables it to be easily read by all audience and its added value is that covers topics from all around the world, not only from American history/present.
