Book Description

October 1, 2003
Angels have much to teach us; their stories are as relevant today as they were in pagan times. They are our spiritual guides and protectors, bringers of death and saviors of our souls. Their stories reveal fundamental cultural truths.

The World of Angels takes a unique look at the myriad angels permeating human history and literature. Placing equal emphasis on information and storytelling, this lavishly illustrated book is full of fascinating facts about angels in history, legend, and lore, conveyed through the medium of the story. Accompanying each story is an original full-color illustration, commissioned to convey the magic wisdom of each angel.

From fallen angels to fairies, guardian angels to the famous archangels of the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, The World of Angels provides insight into the magical world of angels, beings that embody all that is good and bad, mischievous and well meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Angels, February 3, 2004
This review is from: The World of Angels (Hardcover)
Angels as creatures of the imagination, of belief; as anthropomorphisms of our collective unconscious; as entities which give shape to our lives, which help us to understand the incomprehensible - such is the approach of Gossamer Penwyche in The World of Angels.
Ms. Penwyche describes their provenance, their metamorphoses through time and cultures. She `fleshes' them out in fantastic stories framed in fact.
As in her previous exploration, The World of Fairies
she offers a delightful insight into the phenomenon of Angels and draws interest from the Bible, the Quran, and the religions that they inspired. Buddhism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Paganism too are shown to have their angelic features.
I would highly recommend The World of Angels.
It is well written, evocatively illustrated, wonderfully researched.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written, January 7, 2004

Ingrid Remkins (Kimberley, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The World of Angels (Hardcover)
There have been many books written about angels in the past decade or so, many of which I have read. What makes The World Of Angels by Gossamer Penwyche particularly noteworthy? Quite simply, it is her use of the language and her scholarship. Not only is it a divine pleasure to read, but it is obvious that her depth of knowledge on the subject is profound. Moreover, she has a way of imparting this knowledge that is accessible without being simplistic. I can't wait to read her next book!
