Book Description

Demetrius makes his first mistake when he lets his best friend Halcyon marry Eleyna, the love of his life, without saying a word. On the day of the wedding, he walks away from the Elencheran town of Dove's Meadow and joins the army.

He makes his second mistake when the pirate Black Iris tricks him into letting dozens of men, women and children die in a fire. Demetrius is imprisoned in grief and disgrace.

But he can atone. The Black Iris is dead. The Ivory Rose has risen to the top of the pirates and is leading brutal raids on the coast. If Demetrius can capture and kill her, he'll win his pardon.

And then Demetrius discovers the Ivory Rose is Eleyna. He must decide which will be his third mistake: losing his last chance at a pardon or destroying the one woman he's ever loved.

About the Author

David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David's dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.

Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu's Epiphany and A World Apart, combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten., David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Epic story of friendship July 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
betrayal and redemption. Epic fantasy is no where near the top of my must read list of genres but pirates are and I haven't read a good pirate story in long time. This writer did a lot of things right for me in an epic fantasy: 1) no info. dump - this was my first trip to Elenchera and I learned what I needed to about the world as the story went along. 2) powerful female characters - the Bechel test for female characters is there are at least two and they talk to each other about something other than men. Plus they were complicated and intense. 3) brilliant characterization through plot - you can't decide who to root for because they argue their cases so strongly, I can't remember the last time I read something like that. Now do be prepared for a long meandering tale in the fact that you get to know generations like a family saga set in a fantasy world. Ordinary people though, no royalty (thank you!). This story is so strong in characters and plot (with a touch of magic) that it would appeal to more than just epic fantasy fans.

I received a copy to review from the author during the Discover Fantasy Tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'A World Apart' Stands Apart from the Crowd December 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
`A World Apart' is a superbly woven fantasy narrative. It centers on the story of three friends, Demetrius, Eleyna, and Halcyon. These three friends share their dreams when young only to have life take them on voyages they could never have imagined. It is a story of love and friendship. The pirate ship, the Aeonian, is so cool with ten cannons and an eclectic crew. It terrorizes all of Elenchera. There is magic at the edge of the world, which you get to stick your hand into along with the crew of the Aeonian. There are many exciting sword fights, and even a few fights using magic conjured in the palm of the characters' hands. Details such as a card game called Kings and Jesters, which is so neat I want to play it, but I will definitely not place any bets! There are also many secrets to discover, but perhaps none as great as the real identity of the Black Iris. Oh, and be good in Dove's Meadow or you might be sentenced to the pit! There are many exciting twists and turns in this tale before the story weaves back around to an impressive conclusion.

'A World Apart' is not a quick read, certainly, and not a light read, but if you are willing to make the commitment to this wonderful book, you will be rewarded. The story moves well and the prose is written masterfully. The tale unfolds like a grand map of Elenchera, the land in which it is set. You will come to know the characters, rooting for them, hoping they survive, wanting them to be successful in their quests, which are sometimes for redemption and at other times for vengeance.

David Brown's gritty style of writing fantasy is unique in many ways. There is solidness to his prose, you feel you are treading the dusty path, or finding your balance on the deck of a tossing ship at sea. The action is swift and often surprising. Get ready for your heart to beat rapidly during many scenes! Some scenes might bring forth a tear or two, but never in an exploitive or cheap way. `A World Apart' is a beautifully crafted story. It progresses on many levels and Mr. Brown does an amazing job of bringing the pieces together. From beginning to end, the reader is part of the journey. You will witness battles and find yourself entwined in the emotional lives of the characters. There is never a dull moment, yet at the same time, the manner in which the characters develop is both insightful and believable.

As a philosopher of sorts, I could not help but notice many subtle observations regarding human nature and motivation. These were worth the read alone! While in the midst of the exciting and mesmerizing text, be sure not to miss them! There are many such gems.

I could not read `A World Apart' fast because I was enjoying each scene too much. Having completed it, I think it was well worth the read and I highly recommend it. This is great writing with a groundbreaking aspect to its vision. I believe `A World Apart' is unique in the fantasy genre. Let it sink into your bones, as a pirate, a soldier, or a lover separated by time and circumstance from your one true love.

This is such a great book. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! Awesome fantasy story! March 23, 2013
By Liss
Format:Paperback
A World Apart is part of a series but unlike most series you do not have to read them in order. The books is set in the world of "Elenchera". This is a world that Mr Brown took 10 years to build with a 47,000 year history. Each book is a different story set in a different time period. I love this idea. I have not read the first book but trust me I am going to pick it up soon. A World Apart told me about "Elenchera" and gave me all the information I needed to read and understand what the world was like without a history lesson. It's just enough in the right places.
I want to give props to Mr. Brown for creating a world where women could be strong and powerful. I finished this book over a week ago but I wanted to get my thoughts in place before I wrote this review. I was so absorbed into this world that when I finished the last page, I was still thinking about the characters and The Order. Part of the book just made me so angry and then I felt sad but then I was happy.

My criteria for a 5 star book is based on several things.

Did I feel emotion... Yes, I was angry, I was sad, I was happy and at sometimes annoyed with the characters. (Being annoyed with characters is a good thing. It means they were really well done and I felt a connection to them)
Did I reflect on the story... Yes, for a week its been in my head and scenes of the story just keep mulling over in my head.
Did I want to know more... Yes, I want to read more stories about "Elenchera". The world is vast and so much going on that you want to know more and this story is just a sample of what is to come.
Did I connect with the characters... Yes, I felt for the characters. Mr. Brown did a excellent job of giving everything we needed to invest ourselves in each of his characters. He didn't leave me wondering about how who these people were.
A World Apart did that and more. I am a huge fan of Tolkien and as most of us know that he built his own world as well. Anyone can build a world but it takes a special person to make a world you want to invest your time into. "Elenchera" is a place that you want to invest your reading time. I am really looking forward to more books from Mr. Brown.

Fans of fantasy and built worlds will love this. Just because its fantasy do not let this deter you from picking this book up. The fantasy elements are there but its not overwhelming and the characters will pull you in and make you want to keep reading. It is very well written and flows from one part of the story to another and is never confusing.

I was given a e-book of this by the author for a honest review but I want a print copy for my book shelf. Yes, its that good!!
