Book Description

April 14, 2005
An illustrated romp through one of the oddest and most fiercely competitive global competitions: the World Beard and Moustache Championships.

Since its humble beginnings in Germany in 1990, the World Beard and Moustache Championships has blossomed into an international event that has since been staged in Norway, Sweden, and, in 2003, the United States. The competition awards prizes in seventeen categories, such as Dali Moustache, Freestyle Goatee, Garibaldi, and German Imperial, and some of the best and most notable contestants from the last ten years are featured here. You will encounter Ted Sedman, president of London's Handlebar Club, who was in the Guinness Book of World Records for having Britain's longest moustache; Paul Miller and his impressive Fu Manchu; Gary Johnson and his award-winning Musketeer; and Bruce Roe and his manly Wild West-all brave, bold, and creative men united by a single goal: the pursuit of true individuality.

It's impossible not to be won over by this dedicated group of facial hair fantasists. Chock-full of photos that will tickle and fascinate, The World Beard and Moustache Championships is an irresistible tribute to these stylish and passionate creations.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In November 2003, proud men from around the world gathered in Carson City, Nev., to flaunt their facial hair masterpieces at the World Beard and Moustache Championships, an event that sprouted up in Germany in 1990. The various 'dos demonstrated not only inspired style and painstaking craft but also natural ability, and the cream of the crop are pictured here according to category (Handlebar, Fu Manchu, Musketeer, etc.). Some of the competitors seem to take their lifelong work seriously, posing with studied intensity, while others grin childishly behind their whiskers. The images of men in costumes sporting their natural sculptures are hilarious, but what makes the book truly compelling are the profiled eccentrics like Alf Jarrald, 82, who won both Best Sideburns and second place overall, "with a small face bracketed by such massive nests of hair, he looks more like a squirrel than any other human on earth." Many categories strictly prohibit styling aids, but in some competitions, like the wacky "Full Beard Freestyle," they are "permitted, often exhausted," allowing for some intricate designs that twist and curl, defying gravity. Beard and mustache artisans of all ages should appreciate this delightful little book, which could make a great Father's Day gift. 45 b&w and 45 full-color photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bare Faces Have Empty Souls, May 5, 2005

I attended the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Carson City on a lark, and entered myself as a contestant in a bout of sheer madness. It was pretty difficult to imagine what these people would be like. Before long, I learned that anyone willing to transform his face into a piece of abstract art is fine by me. This magical Halloween weekend of October, 2003 is well encapsulated in this amusing and photo-filled masterwork - and I don't just say that becuase my photo is the final image in the volume. Come to Berlin in October for the next competition and feel the excitement - just don't touch my beard.

as a conference program. I thought there might be information on types of moustaches, with illustrations, plus a bit of history. It's just some information on a meeting of a moustache club, with bios of some of the members, and some details of who won prizes. There isn't even a complete set of pictures of the contest winners.
