From the Inside Flap

ince it was first published, World Class Production and Inventory Management has become essential reading for quality professionals who are responsible for distribution, production, and inventory planning. Written by Darryl Landvater—a well-known consultant and educator with The Oliver Wight Companies—it continues to be a popular primer, adopted by a growing number of training organizations both here and abroad. Now, this authoritative resource has been completely revised and expanded to bring you an up-to-date, in-depth look at the unique tools, systems, and procedures of production and inventory management (P&IM). Providing practical guidelines and proven methodologies, the Second Edition of World Class Production and Inventory Management delivers a fool-proof game plan for operating a successful manufacturing enterprise. Along with comprehensive coverage of successful methods and techniques, including Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II), Just-in-Time, Total Quality Management, and Distribution Resource Planning (DRP), the book walks you through key operating techniques, from master production scheduling to sales and operations planning. This new edition is also one of the first to cover Efficient Consumer Response (ECR). ECR is designed for retailers as well as manufacturers who find themselves expanding into retail operations. With clear explanations and practical advice, you’ll learn how to evaluate material and capacity plans, as well as how to implement MRP II and use an MRP II closed loop system to operate your company more effectively. Real-world examples from companies such as Boeing and Martin Marietta are among those examples adding new perspectives on manufacturing integration and managing multiple demand streams. You’ll find essential details on:
  • Efficient Consumer Response (ECR)—definition, objectives, implementation
  • Customer linking—vendor managed replenishment (VMR), multiple demand streams, integration of VMR with planning and scheduling systems
  • Demand management—fundamentals of sales planning, available-to-promise (ATP) calculations, distribution resource planning
  • Material requirements planning—key activities and measurements, bottom up feedback, concurrent engineering
  • Plant and supplier scheduling—input-output and shop floor control, Kanban, purchase orders, Just-in-Time
Indispensable for APICS members seeking CPIM certification, World Class Production and Inventory Management will be equally so for all who are looking to achieve performance excellence in production and inventory management.

5.0 out of 5 stars Systems Implementation & Review, June 28, 2000
This review is from: World Class Production and Inventory Management, 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I read this book as part of a Masters degree, comparing actual methods with "The Proven Path". It is the only humorous book I have read on methodologies and the concepts are of relevance to all systems implementation - not just manufacturing. I thought the book was easy to read and very interesting - in short, it is excellent. A must for those pursuing a production career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great manufacturing management book, December 9, 1999
This review is from: World Class Production and Inventory Management, 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
The book does not go into great detail but it is worth reading because it explains everything you need to understand how a manufactoring company has to work in order to achieve full controll over its business processes. The examples are very simple but very usefull. It is also a good book for people that do not have a background in manufacturing because it explains everything you need in order to understand the main subjects.
