from the chapter titled “Pattern Strategy

Putting maneuvers together in a smooth, precise and correct pattern is the ultimate goal in reining. When you walk into the arena to show what you’ve got to the judge, all your time, training and efforts are on the line. This is what you’ve worked so hard for. But things happen so fast that you don’t have time to think about anything except your next maneuver. This is when all your preparation comes into play, and you execute your game plan. And, believe us, you need a game plan.
There’s an old saying that goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” We never enter any show, anywhere, without planning a strategy for success. Even if we’ve been to the same showgrounds many times and have run the patterns hundreds of times, we still strategize our every move before we enter the show pen.
In this chapter, we’ll tear down the parts of a standard NRHA pattern and give you tips and some training techniques on how to handle the maneuvers, plus troubleshoot any common problem areas.
It all begins with your entry into the pen. According to the official NRHA patterns, there are walk-in and run-in patterns, and how you approach either sets the tone for your entire run.

Terrific book - covers so much more than just riding/training. My husband pinched my copy and I had to order a second copy to keep for me.

I knew nothing about reining when I bought this book. I found it fun to read, loved the pictures, and definitely learned something. I gained an appreciation of the sport. I didn't know what to expect from a book published by "Western Horseman", but I was impressed because the book was better than I had hoped for. Better layout, publishing, etc. I would definitely buy another book by "Western Horseman" again.

My only complaint about this book is that it spent a lot of time in the beginning talking about how to select (as in buy/purchase) a good reining horse. It talked about good physical features and body type of the horse. This was not helpful to me because I already had a horse - my horse.

This book was so helpful to me! When it comes to trying to teach your horse to rein, this book helps so much! And it teaches you much more besides the basics of reining! It's a great book i would recommend it for anyone!
