Book Description

September 1995
From the trickster of Native American legends to the devious Wile E. Coyote of cartoon fame, the coyote has long been associated with cunning, greed, and guile. An enduring symbol of wildness, combining the sleekness of the cat, the intelligence of the fox, and the wildness of the wolf, the coyote is perhaps best known for its haunting howl -- the true voice of the wild. Richly illustrated, The World of the Coyote is a tribute to this complex creature's remarkable spirit and an invitation to a greater understanding of the coyote's vital place in our world.

"Wayne Grady has done a superb job.... He has brought us a new image of the coyote -- one that demands our immense respect -- the icon of success and defiance against those who think they can control nature." -- Dr. Bob Crabtree, Director, Yellowstone Ecosystem Studies, Bozeman, Montana

"This book is a testament to the cunning, adaptability and sheer tenacity of the coyote in its struggle to survive." -- Mike Gibeau, Conservation Biologist.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-This excellent nature study filled with gorgeous, full-color, captioned photos examines the coyote from every angle. Taxonomy, social organization, reproduction, and hunting behavior are all clearly and concisely described in language accessible to the amateur naturalist. Grady outlines the history of the animal's contact with humans, from Native North American mythology to modern fear and hatred by Western ranchers. Included in this section is a very graphic discussion of the inhumane methods used to eradicate the animals believed to cause substantial livestock loss. Nevertheless, the author proposes that attempts to eliminate coyotes from the wild actually serve to increase their rate of reproduction and encourage their spread over a larger range. The final section cites research statistics that explode the myths about livestock predation and discusses the need for maintaining wild coyote populations to provide ecological balance.
