From the Back Cover

"No one should think of setting off around the world without first consulting Jimmy Cornell's works."--Practical Boat Owner

World Cruising Essentials is a unique book that presents a comprehensive overview of the current world cruising scene.

Based primarily on data Jimmy Cornell has collected during his 15 years as organizer of 27 transatlantic and 5 round-the-world rallies, as well as his own circumnavigations, this book distills the experiences of over 15,000 rally sailors who collectively have sailed 18 million miles, as well as the views of thousands of other sailors worldwide. It is this collective knowledge and consensus viewpoint that distinguish this book from other cruising handbooks, most of which present only their author's opinions and experiences.

World Cruising Essentials examines trends and changes that have taken place in the world cruising scene since its forerunner volume, World Cruising Survey, was published in 1989. It explores all areas of interest to anyone making preparations for an offshore voyage. The size and type of boats, equipment installed, electrics and electronic gear, practical aspects of life afloat, communications, formalities worldwide and the human aspects of cruising are all considered, and frequently asked questions addressed.

World Cruising Essentials includes a wealth of practical advice and information for all long-distance cruisers and will be welcomed by the cruising community for its invaluable insight.

  • Where do the boats go? World movement and distribution of cruising yachts
  • The cruising boat today: Size, material, rig, equipment, breakages
  • Life afloat: Provisioning, refrigeration, watermakers, engines and fuel, energy consumption, generation, self-steering gear, anchors, tenders, watchkeeping, weather, pets
  • The ideal cruising boat: Improvements and comforts
  • Safety: Piracy, firearms, personal safety, collisions, abandoning ship
  • Practical aspects of cruising: Formalities and restrictions, cost, communications, tourism, long term planning
  • Psychological aspects of the cruising life: Crew, expectations, seasickness, the female point of view
  • The future: Significant incidents and lessons
  • About the Author

Jimmy Cornell is the guru of long-distance sailors. Having sailed 150,000 miles in his own boats and completed two circumnavigations, he was the first author to tackle the problems of world cruising in a systematic way. His wide-ranging surveys conducted among cruising yachts in all the oceans of the world have dealt with every aspect of voyaging under sail and have proved an invaluable source of advice and reference for long-distance cruisers worldwide.

Jimmy Cornell is the acknowledged authority on world cruising, and his two companion volumes, World Cruising Routes and World Cruising Handbook, are international best-sellers.

Over a period of 15 years Jimmy Cornell organized a range of offshore sailing rallies, including 27 transatlantic rallies and 5 round-the-world rallies, enabling thousands of sailors to fulfill their dream of bluewater sailing.

    More About the Author

Jimmy Cornell was born in Romania in 1940. He grew up in Brasov and later attended Bucharest University where he studied economics. With his British wife Gwenda, he moved to London in 1969. He took up sailing while working as a reporter for the BBC World Service in London. In 1974 Jimmy Cornell fitted out himself a 36 foot fibreglass hull (a Trintella III, van de Stadt design - the first AVENTURA). In 1975 he left England with Gwenda and their two children (Doina 7 and Ivan 5) on a world voyage lasting 6 years, which took them to some 70 countries and totalled 68,000 miles. During the voyage Jimmy Cornell sent back regular radio reports to the BBC World Service.
A second AVENTURA (Bill Dixon design, 12 metre/40 feet in steel) was built in 1989 and completed a circumnavigation between 1989 and 1992, some of which was part of the first round the world rally organized by Jimmy between 1991 and 1992.
AVENTURA III (an OVNI 43 designed by Philippe Briand and built in France) was launched in May 1998 and sailed in 1999 to Antarctica. From there Jimmy and son Ivan sailed AVENTURA III to Alaska and British Columbia. From Vancouver the yacht was shipped to the Mediterranean. In 2006 AVENTURA III completed a five year circumnavigation. To date Jimmy Cornell has sailed 200,000 miles in all oceans of the world including three circumnavigations and voyages to Antarctica and Alaska.
In his writing, Jimmy Cornell decided to tackle the various aspects of sailing and offshore cruising in a systematic way, and he conducted extensive surveys with cruising sailors in all oceans of the world, dealing with every aspect of voyaging under sail.
Jimmy Cornell's reputation as a writer on cruising matters was consolidated by the publication in 1987 of WORLD CRUISING ROUTES, which became an international best-seller and has been described as the "bible of offshore sailors" as it deals with all sailing routes of the world. Now in its sixth edition, WORLD CRUISING ROUTES has been translated into German, French, Italian and Spanish. With well over 100,000 copies sold, the book is one of the best-selling nautical publications in the world. A companion volume, WORLD CRUISING HANDBOOK, had been replaced in 2010 by WORLD CRUISING DESTINATIONS that deals with all maritime nations in the world and gives details of their main attractions, facilities, formalities, practical information and charter opportunities. Jimmy Cornell is the author of over one dozen books, which have been translated into several languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Hungarian Romanian and Japanese.
In 1986 Cornell launched and organised the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean. As a result of the success of the first ARC he founded the World Cruising Club, which specialises in international sailing events. The ARC is the largest transocean event in the world and one of the most successful sailing events in history. Jimmy is credited with being the founder of the cruising rally concept and, until his retirement from event organising in 1999, he had organized twenty transatlantic and five round the world rallies.
Jimmy Cornell's most ambitious project was the Millennium Odyssey round the world rally, which started in August 1998 to celebrate the new millennium. The round the world rally finished in Rome in April 2000, when the Millennium Flame, that had been lit in Jerusalem and had been carried around the world by the yachts sailing in the rally, was handed over to Pope John Paul II. Over 50 yachts sailed in the Millennium Odyssey, making it the largest ever round the world event.
In 1999 Jimmy Cornell sold his interest in the World Cruising Club. In 2000, Jimmy Cornell launched http://www.noonsite.com, a website dedicated to cruising sailors. The website contains practical information on all maritime nations of the world and is considered an essential source of information by thousands of cruising sailors. In the intervening years noonsite has become one of the most popular websites among cruising sailors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information, November 3, 2004

Cornell offers his own viewpoints as well as those of others, does a good job of labeling facts vs. options, and answers a lot of questions I had about cruising. Safety equipment, storms, piracy, dangerous areas, firearms, and communications are all covered well. Common equipment failures are given, along with statistics to back them up. For example, how often does the mast of a cuising yacht really fail, and how?

This review is from: World Cruising Essentials : The Boats, Gear, and Practices That Work Best at Sea (Hardcover)
I am not a world cruiser and have only ventured a few miles from shore and then not too far from the other side of the sound within which we sail every summer. This book was a disappointment. It is basically a distillation of the periodic surveys the author conducts of people who cruise in small yachts either on their own or as part of an offshore rally such as the ARC. The problem for me is that the book amounts to a collection of advice, not from people who necessarily know that much about cruising, but instead from those it was convenient for Cornell to interview. It's like a Zaggat guide, filled with lots of pepole's opinions but not necessarily people who know anything about food. Frankly, I don't know enough to judge whether this interviewees ideas are right on, or that interviewees ideas are nonsense-- that's not my point. I was looking for a single authoritative voice, not a report on what a collection of people with the funds and gumption to cross oceans happen to believe. This one is going back.

1.0 out of 5 stars A statistical report. Name misleading., March 10, 2007
This review is from: World Cruising Essentials : The Boats, Gear, and Practices That Work Best at Sea (Hardcover)
I was disappointed buying and reading this book. From its name, I was sure that the book tells you what BEST WORK AT SEA. I found it gives statistics of many boaters most of them amateurs, using this or that equipment. Implying, that what all amateurs and others are doing is the best. I bought the book to know what Jimmy cornell thinks is best. The problem with amateurs, and I am one of them, that we get fludded by info from manufacturers, and "Friends". There is a lack of professional advise in these areas.
