Review

'By the time a book reaches it's sixth edition you can be pretty sure it's worth buying' Sailing Today (November 2008) 'Jimmy Cornell's 'World Cruising Routes' has been my principle source for planning my circumnavigation and weather routing. It simply told me when I can safely be in any ocean of the world and for how long.' Mike Harker, circumnavigator on 'Wanderlust' 'Jimmy Cornell is without a doubt a foremost authority on world cruising ... Cornell's new book is the perfect companion for World Cruising Routes and like Cornell's guidebook to the world's oceans, World Cruising Destinations is sure to become a well-worn classic' John Snyder, Ocean Navigator Online, (March 2011) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

The best route planning book for yachties on the market. No pictures of beautiful beaches, fancy yachts or raging storms, just the information you need about how to avoid the worst of the weather and what charts you will need. A necessary planning item - even if you're only dreaming!

Interesting book with one of two useful snippets and suggestions. Not particularly well written though, with random anecdotes and more coverage of some aspects than others, probably based on the author's own experiences.

As a yacht delivery skipper who sails 12,000+ nm per year I depend on Jimmy Cornell's Routes book to help me form the basis of an unfamiliar passage plan. I have recently executed several passages that are listed in the book and was pleased by the result (and the advance local knowledge provided me by this book). The seasonal weather patterns and speed of advance are often the most difficult aspects of planning long passages. This book helps. I just broke down and purchased the latest edition.

I gave only four stars because I disagree with the Jimmy's advice on the Hawaii to California route. I've done nine of these HI-CA passages and have never executed the passage as the book describes...and neither has any other yacht delivery captain that I'm aware of.

This is a must have for your navigation station....... I can only say that if you value safety, thereby providing a more likely outcome of fun and pleasure, then use this volume, plan with this volume, and live by this volume and you will give yourself the widest margin of safety possible.

I have sailed to Hawaii 4 times and made a solo circumnavigation. I carried only two books, Distances between Ports and World Cruising Routes. I will say it one more time,
"This book is a must". for the long distance sailor. If you want pictures, buy a tourist guide.

World Cruising Routes. Among the cruising yachtsmen of the world Jimmy Cornell's name is eminent. He has sailed over 200 000 miles including three circumnavigations, visited the Antarctic and the Arctic etc. He is the well known founder of the transatlantic (ARC) and round the world rallies, and has thus helped thousands of sailors to fulfil their dreams. At the same time he has made, and published, surveys on all the practical aspects of ocean sailing, boats, equipment, costs etc. His books contain a wealth of facts and are written in a clear-cut style. Having sailed on board Jimmy's Aventura on a couple of ocean crossings I also came to personally appreciate the extent of his knowledge on every aspect of sailing.

First published in 1987 World Cruising Routes now appeares in its 6th edition. It is the indispensable handbook and route map of all the ocean passages and long distance cruising areas of the world. It presents over 1000 sailing routes and provides 6000 waypoints. It contains information of the winds, weather and currents in every season thus enabling cruisers to plan the best route and timing. In spite of the huge amount of information the book is easy to read. During my circumnavigation, which ended ten years ago, I already saw this book in almost every boat that I visited. It really is the heavy weight classic for ocean cruisers.

Unless you're a professional sailor, then this book probably tells you everything you need to know to get you started on planning your cruising routes just about anywhere around the world. Lots of insights and tips to the respective routes. Quite factual and dry, focused on timings, currents, distances and other technical details necessary for route planning. For me it would be great to have someone like Jimmy produce several books, each specific to a region, however, providing at least an overview on the attractions on route. This would have added much value to my ability to actually plan an entire journey, rather than knowing how to get from A to B. Does anyone know of such material for the Meditteranean and the Atlantic crossing from Gibraltar to the Caribbean?

I have carried World Cruising Routes aboard my sailboat ever since I bought the first edition in the late 80s in preparation for going cruising. World Cruising Routes is widely recognized throughout the world as "the bible" of world voyage planning - I have even met Uruguayan cruisers on the dock in Punta del Este talking about how essential "la biblia" was and I have met German cruisers as well who have also used the book for decades (it has been translated in several languages). World Cruising Routes lays out all the major routes that a boater uses to sail around the world. Over the years, Cornell has continually improved the book - the current 6th edition covers over 1000 routes and includes waypoints along each route as well as the charts, cruising guides and pilots for each area. Cornell discusses the alternative routes for circumnavigating as well as for round-Atlantic and round-Pacific trips. He discusses the weather, seasons, wind and currents in each area that affect route planning. No one knows and better explains world cruising than Jimmy Cornell. I highly recommend World Cruising Routes to boaters planning offshore cruising.
