Product Description

The 1998 edition of Giro d'Italia is simply one of the most thrilling and dramatic races in more than a decade. WCP's exclusive remastered DVD highlights all the magic moments as many of the sport's biggest names clash in a heroic contest for the fabled maglia rosa (pink jersey), which changes hands no fewer than eight times on the long road to Milan! The battle commences right from the prologue time trial and continues to the final and phenomenally mountainous week, when Marco Pantani makes his move. Going into the final time trial, Pantani has only a minute lead, but he delivers the time trial performance of his life, cheered on by thousands of fervent fans. In addition to great climbing and time trial action, the sprinters get a chance to show their finishing skills--and as usual, "Super" Mario Cipollini is the pick of them, winning four stages and equaling Eddy Merckx's total of 25 stage wins at the Giro. Commentary by Phil Liggett & Paul Sherwen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Star is Born, October 27, 2008
This review is from: 1998 Giro Ditalia Dvd (Misc.)
With commentary by Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen and impeccable editing of the race footage, this memorable event was a breakthrough for Marco Pantani, as he edged Pavel Tonkov and Alex Zulle in a grueling battle that had eight lead changes until the champion was crowned.

Pantani was also the top mountain climber and solidified his position as the best in the world, though sprinter Mario Cipollini captured his share of headlines by winning four stages. This is a celebration of the elements which make for legendary moments in sports and a star being born who had the flamboyance and courage that made this an incredible Grand Tour.
