Book Description

December 13, 2005
Once upon a time, the source of the devil R's invincible powers was The Book of S & M. But one day, a young man stole the book without knowing what it was, cut it into strips and used it to create a girl doll named "S" and a boy doll named "M" out of papier-mache. With that act, the unimaginable power that the devil held from the book was divided between the two dolls! While on a class trip in France, Sekai is rescued from a terrible accident by a mysterious young man and the doll known as "S." Soon, however, Sekai discovers that she's not only lost in a foreign country--she's also lost in time! From the creators of the manga classic that inspired the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena comes a dark and gripping Gothic fantasy.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With more self-awareness, this magical historical romance could be a parody of goth-styled fantasy manga, but it's played all too straight, and the result is flat and incoherent. During a train wreck, Sekai and a mysterious cherub-like boy clutching a doll are thrown back in time. There, a version of her school crush tries to rape her, after saving her from mysterious forces who want to burn her as a witch. The layouts are poorly constructed, leading the reader to wonder which balloon or caption comes next, and Sekai is all staring marble eyes, short petticoats and frilly garters. It's sub-par fantasy fulfillment, with the girl dueled over by a variety of boys who want to claim her in exotic, historical settings. Sekai is a pawn, not knowing what's happening to her or why, desired by the boys because possessing her (in one way or another) will grant them power. She's got a magical gemstone somehow welded to her body and every so often, faux-poetic folklore is dropped in to hint at a backstory that's trying to impart some amount of meaning to this adolescent daydream. 4.0 out of 5 stars looking for a magical girl romance novel?, January 9, 2006
This review is from: The World Exists for Me Volume 1 (Paperback)
Then this manga is for you. This volume is mostly an introduction, but it looks like it may have a fairly interesting mythology once it gets going. The heroine is fairly passive in this volume, but that may be due to the rather rude shocks she recieves early in the story. If you're offended by naughty scenes or sexual coercion fantasies, you'll want to skip this one.
