Crawford's Last and One of His Best,

This review is from: World of Hank Crawford (Audio CD)
Alto saxophonist Hank Crawford, who passed into jazz heaven earlier this year, was one of the practitioners of what was called soul-jazz. Having been in Ray Charles' band for several years, he brought the sensibility of rhythm and blues to his playing. This 2000 recording is his last stuido release of new material and a good buy.Crawford is supported by band members who each have their standout moments on the cd. Especially notable is pianist and organist Danny Mixon. Although Crawford is synonymous with soul-jazz also gives us danceable bop with "Back in the Day," gospel tinged ballads like "Trust In Me" and "Come Sunday," and even the latin/samba flavored opening track "Grab The World." Crawford will be missed but his music and style live on. This cd us a must for jazz fans wanting to own a piece of his contribution to the genre.
