I happened to see Sally Timms tonight, and her live show was fantastic, so I purchased this record, and was even more pleasantly surprised. Different from her work with the Mekons, it at times sounds like a Yann Tiersen record, and at others, like Broadcast, but it is all held together by Timms haunting voice. It's a great album, and I highly recommend you pick it up.

Exotic, bitter concept album.
Songs by and about men. Wickedly atmospheric, a sensual study of pain, frailty and brutality. Often funny, too. Sparse and swirling, channeling country-rock, psychedelia and electronics, with some incisive rhythms. Sally delivers an unnervingly intimate and intense vocal, an etched, slithering purr coiled viciously tight. Severe but empathetic. |
