4.0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas, Poor Binding
I bought this atlas for my husband. He's really into geography and such, and he really likes the atlas. My only complaint is that they are poorly bound. I bought it for him for Christmas and by the end of Christmas day the whole back cover had separated from the main binding. I sent it back and got another one, and when I first opened it and looked at it, the same thing...

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading maps reflect historical bias, or at least inaccuracy
The maps of east Asia, specifically the Han, Tang, Ming, and Qing empires, show a single color which seems to indicate that the Korean peninsula was usually part of China. In fact this was never true. What, did you hire a Chinese revisionist mapmaker and then not proofread for accuracy? A historical atlas needs to be accurate, because people look at it to see and learn...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas, Poor Binding, January 5, 2006
This review is from: World History Atlas (Hardcover)
I bought this atlas for my husband. He's really into geography and such, and he really likes the atlas. My only complaint is that they are poorly bound. I bought it for him for Christmas and by the end of Christmas day the whole back cover had separated from the main binding. I sent it back and got another one, and when I first opened it and looked at it, the same thing was already happening to it, and we hadn't even used it! We decided to keep it anyway since it wasn't hurting anything really and he really enjoys reading it. Just watch out for that problem as it seems unlikely that we would get the only two books that were falling apart in that manner. Also, he said that in the first one we got, some of the maps were right across the center of two pages, so you couldn't see the part that was down in the center where it goes into the binding. In the second one we got it wasn't as severe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb integration of pics, timelines, data and maps all in one book!, September 30, 2005

This review is from: World History Atlas (Hardcover)
To understand the histories of separate countries, one has to put it in the context of the whole world. And this book is really good by having two parts: Part 1 (over 100 pages) is devoted to the holistic presentation of the evolution of the history of the whole world, whereby the reader can understand the interaction between countries and conduct interesting comparisons and contrasts between them on the same timeline. Part 2 is devoted to the evolution of the histories of separate regions. When one combines the two parts in one's mind, one's interpretation of the world history can never be the same!

History of humankind is full of politics, arts, science, achievements and frailty here and there, now and then. This book, with its superb combination of different data formats, can really give one the primal sense of wonder generated from the history made by human beings.

If you think history is fun and exiting, your view will be confirmed by this book. If you think history is no fun and no excitement, you will have a second thought after reading this gigantic book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good way to observe the world through time, June 15, 2008
This review is from: World History Atlas (Hardcover)
Really awesome book showing things not found in a normal school-issued atlas or textbook. The maps are incredibly detailed and informative. The book's pages are large and broad showing vast amounts of area. Colors and icons can be deciphered easily showing cities, capitals, and empire boundaries; and on the side of the map is a synopsis of the history period. Don't hesitate just buy it. I have no complaints!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very though, descriptive and comprehensive, May 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this "atlas" for my thirteen year old boy who has become fascinated by maps and history. This atlas is much more than an atlas, definitively covering most of world history in a way that is illustrative yet also detailed and continues to provide many hours of study and inspiration. It is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ..., February 11, 2006

I've always been interested in history but most of my attempts to learn about it are thwarted by dry boring accounts. This atlas has been wonderful. It has given me a wonderful broad view of history and a better understanding of world geography.

Enjoy

The maps of east Asia, specifically the Han, Tang, Ming, and Qing empires, show a single color which seems to indicate that the Korean peninsula was usually part of China. In fact this was never true. What, did you hire a Chinese revisionist mapmaker and then not proofread for accuracy? A historical atlas needs to be accurate, because people look at it to see and learn. In fact you have ignored several kingdoms, including Goguryeo, Silla, Baekjae, Balhae, and several other smaller ones. These kingdoms existed for several hundred years. As a Korean descendent, I'm not only disappointed, but angry at this sort of negligence. My complaint is also directly corroborated by Rieu, readers, please see his review of this book on the web. If this part is so misleading, then I shudder to think what else is wrong in this atlas. Stay away from it; caveat emptor.

2.0 out of 5 stars History Written from the Anglo-American Perspective, December 2, 2005

This review is from: World History Atlas (Hardcover)
I was actually anticipating something better. There are, of course, some minor flaws and discrepancies, I'm sure they'll all be rectified in the next edition. But there are also many great flops and extremely biased historical expositions, mostly about 20th century issues -whitewashing U.S. and the West, denigrating Cold War opponents, partiality about certain southeastern Europe factions, omitting some of the most important historical carnages(namely, the Armenian genocide and other many atrocious events which took place around world. Prepared by a majorty English team and a general editor, this book will fall short of your expectations and not satisfy you, especially about the the European history part of which I consider the number of maps insufficient and not too detailed as it should be.

Rue the day I bought this atlas. They used to do better than this. Don't spend your precious money on this one if you're really searching out for something good.
