Book Description

8 and up3 and upNational Geographic World History Biographies
No one thought that Elizabeth would live to become Queen of England. Her father, Henry VIII, beheaded her mother, Anne Bolyn, for treason in 1536. He then disowned his daughter, declaring her illegitimate. But in 1544, Parliament reestablished her in the line of succession after her half brother and her half sister.

Endowed with immense personal courage and a keen awareness of her responsibility as a ruler, Elizabeth commanded throughout her reign the unwavering respect and allegiance of her subjects.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–These titles have attractive, colorful pages with plentiful photos and reproductions and a running time line across the bottom of most spreads. Dates chronicle important happenings and place the subjects in the context of history and world events. Both authors include early childhood and family background and present a glimpse of everyday life during the period. Accomplishments and hardships are clearly explained with supporting quotes and facts. Maps, text boxes, a glossary, and several Web sources aid report writers. Beautifully illustrated and visually appealing additions.–Kathleen A. Nester, Downingtown High Ninth Grade Center, PA

5.0 out of 5 stars From Outcast to Queen, May 29, 2009

This review is from: World History Biographies: Elizabeth I: The Outcast Who Became England's Queen (National Geographic World History Biographies) (Hardcover)
This is a lovely little book which I recommend in hardback. About 63 pages of full color, glossy photos, each page contains a chronological outline at the bottom, showing the trends in history and the princess who became Queen.

The story of Elizabeth I is actually a miraculous account, beginning with the marriage of her parents (King Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn.) Written in very simple, up-front terms which any person over the age of 10 could understand, some of the topic matter is sensitive. It does address the concerns of Elizabeth's legitimacy, trends in the Catholic Church and Reformation, and how Elizabeth survived. Elizabeth actually succeeded her two siblings - a younger brother who was made King, but who did not live very long, and her sister, also Queen, "Bloody Mary".

By the time Elizabeth ascended to the throne, she had learned much from the painful mistakes of her siblings. She ruled Britain and Ireland for 44 years, from 1559 to 1603. This book is a basic must-read for any student of the Queen.
