Book Description

World History Series March 7, 2002
From March 1942 to December 1944, thousands of innocent American citizens were incarcerated by their own government in prison camps throughout the West. The story of the internment of the Japanese is one of the most shameful in U.S. history, but also serves as a lesson in triumph over adversity. (20030501)

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-This general overview of Executive Order No. 9066 includes photos and information about the internees themselves as well as historical documentation. It begins with a detailed time line from the U.S. entry into the war to the final renunciation case, which was settled in 1968. It then carefully chronicles the events beginning with "The Japanese `Problem,'" continuing through the "Definite Menace" and "Military Necessity," before moving on to "Behind the Barbed Wire," and, finally, "Return to Freedom." Well designed for research and reports, this account includes primary- and secondary-source quotations, all fully footnoted. Most of these quotes are in separate boxes with source information included so readers do not need to flip back and forth. The numerous black-and-white photos set the tone and enhance the information. There is an annotated list of "Works Consulted" and a detailed index. This informative, approachable text will be useful in most collections.
