The author addresses the roles of women and African-American volunteers in the conflict and describes Spanish officers and soldiers as men who fought valiantly for their country. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs, reproductions, and maps provide readers with reference points. Chapter notes, annotated lists of works consulted and further reading, and a detailed index conclude the volume.
