4.0 out of 5 stars PEACE IMAGINED, May 5, 2008
This review is from: The World I Imagine: A Creative Manual for Ending Poverty and Building Peace (Paperback)
We've all thought about how we would change the world were we given the chance or asked. Debbie Jordan has taken the bull by the horns and put forward her thoughts on ending poverty and building a truly peaceful society, two things she feels go hand in hand.

This is a book richly overflowing with ideas. Well put together and eminently readable her thoughts broken down into a encyclopedic version of how to run the world, she works from the axiom that the cost for all basic personal goods and services would be collected as a basic tax that was no more then half the amount earned by the lowest paid fulltime worker on the planet.

Descriptions of how needs differ from wants, how placing everyone on a level playing field and updating systems that in some form, have been in place since medieval times, are just a selection of the ideas she touches on. Our healthcare system, the current political farce and education also are covered.

Skeptics will of course find flaws and rationalize that a total change in how we have come to view ourselves and live our lives would be necessary for this to work. But hey, what does every dialog with the taxi driver, every discussion in the break room and every chat at the beauty parlor land on, what a gosh awful mess we're in and how come no one can seem to find a way to change things.

Debbie Jordan may not have all the answers but if this little book gets into the hands of some of the movers and the shakers and a few grassroots groups with some backbone things could begin to change incrementally. Having a guide such as this one to open dialogs and get people thinking is our best bet of obtaining the peace we all have imagined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Debbie Jordan's "World" Should Be The World We All Imagine, December 14, 2010
This review is from: The World I Imagine: A Creative Manual for Ending Poverty and Building Peace (Paperback)
Written in a way that showcases the ideals that America was built upon, author Debbie Jordan's book THE WORLD I IMAGINE gives us a wonderful framework for what would make the world a better place.

It's not just wishful thinking on the author's part, either. The book highlights ways that all of us, no matter what our lot in life might be, can come together and produce real difference in the world. Jordan shows that its not just about advancement but the basics of humanity that we preach about.

THE WORLD I IMAGINE takes a look at those who have---no matter how much it might be---and how they can realistically help those who have not. It could be with our time, resources and most importantly with our attitude. Everyone should be made to feel as though they are worthy of success. We should look at each other as equals when it comes to what we have the right to.

This is a great read and a wonderful book to reflect on as we are looking for ways we can really use our time on eath in a positive way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, November 14, 2010
This review is from: The World I Imagine: A Creative Manual for Ending Poverty and Building Peace (Paperback)
The World I Imagine by Debbie Jordan is a collection of essays by the author about how to end poverty in the world. Her ideas are certainly interesting. It would be even more interesting if she, or you, or anyone could actually find ways to implement these ideas. The book/writing flows really well and was easy to read, and enjoyable.

Inspiring...
Debbie Jordan shares her vision for a world where basic human needs are met. Shelter, food, transportation, basic clothing, medical, psychological care, dental and vision care, education, and job training, are a few of the items on her list. She is careful to state the need and want are two very different things. Jordan continues her dreams but explains where the funding would come from and the work force. Ending poverty and ending peace go hand-in-hand in Jordan's theory.
Debbie Jordan writes in an easy-to-read manner. Her thoughts are well organized and flow smoothly on the pages. Jordan has inspiring ideas. I hope that someday they are enacted.
