A Nice Try,
By A Customer
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
"World of My Little Pony" is an unofficial guide to the original My Little Pony collectibles from the 1980's. The book does list most ponies distributed in the U.S., with pictures of each pony group, and gives estimated prices for them. The book is poorly organized. Instead of organizing sets by year, they are split into "Adult" and "Baby" categories, and then the sets are alphabetized within those chapters. The problem is that Birge sometimes creates names for sets or ponies, so they do not appear where one would expect within the book. Much of the information is incomplete or simply wrong, especially regarding accessories. The text is often awkward, indicating poor editing. The price guide is also inaccurate, and applies prices to all ponies within a group, even though individual ponies may sell for much higher prices than other ponies from the same set. While the pictures are clear, they are not pleasing to the eye. Many of the ponies appear to be unkempt. Sometimes they are not posed where their symbols, or identifying markers, can be seen in the photos. There was also some bizarre use of MLP accessories as props in the photos, such as using upturned cribs as stands. Finally, the book only covers U.S.-releases. Birge's second book, often confused with this one in customer reviews, covers ponies from other parts of the world. The book is a nice attempt, and I use it occasionally when I can't remember a pony's name. If someone needs a good introduction to MLP, however, there are many websites that offer more complete, and more accurate, information at no cost. This book simply isn't worth the price.

Great Comprehensive guide to pony collectibles,
By Peter (Pennsylvannia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book for anybody interested in My Little Pony. These small collectibles are becoming one of the hottest items on the second hand market. If you are only a starting collector or and avid one, this book is for you. It conatins pictures of over 630 ponies, and even includes variations, pony friends, and the such. Not only are these wonderful pictures included, but so are playsets, clothing, and other collectibles such as movies, clocks, keychains, posters ect. This is a well written book and is needed for any fan. All should be greatful to the author, Debra for doing such a great job. The only thing off may be the price guide. Different collectors offer different prices. However with indexed names, it is easy to calculate your collection in no time. I reccomend this book to any pony collector!

My Little Pony--a GREAT book for the MLP Lover !,
By "mlp-ponynut" (Longview--Beautiful East Texas!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
This is a GREAT "detailed" My Little Pony Book. "The World of My Little Pony, A Guide to Pony Collectibles", is a MUST have for any MLP Lover. Although this book has only the American Ponies, the pictures of the Ponies lets you catalog your collection in no time. Find the Ponies you are missing or name the Ponies you have. There are great pictures of Ponies MIB or MIP too. There are MANY, MANY other My Little Pony items not listed but this book really gives one a better insight into the Pony World. This book does have other items pertaining to My Little Pony like the play-sets and videos, audio tapes, and Pony clothing. It also has Pony purses, sleeping bags, skates, etc. I believe you will find this book very informative. This book also has a pricing guide but REMEMBER, just because it says how much a Pony would cost in the book, prices ONLY reflect the authors view. If you need a particular pony-you will pay more...if you have 2 or 3 of the same pony laying around-you will pay less. The old adage goes here of beauty is in the eye of the beholder--the same goes for $$ amounts. The author, Debra Birge, did a Wonderful job-thank you Debra for bringing our beloved Ponies back to life.

Great photos! Inaccurate information,

I'm a sucker for pretty pictures, and this baby's chock-fulla 'em. Aside from the distracting neon pinks and blues, the identification was mostly correct. Some names were wrong, the prices are SERIOUSLY off, and it's missing a large portion of accessories.
Pony prices are mainly determined by Ebay and what newbie collector is willing to blow on a beat-up Applejack--sure she's cute, but is she worth $20? Prices seemed fairly flat-rate in the book, and though helpful in bartering prices, they mostly just make the antique/resell collectors all googly-eyed and claim that their chewed up 2nd issue Cotton Candy is worth $15 because she's 'collectable'. And yet I still adore the pretty pictures.

The Pros and the Cons,
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
This new book, World of My Little Pony: An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors, written by Debra L. Birge, was indeed a valiant effort. However, it falls flat despite its promise. Birge gives us a horrible price guide. This holds key prices for the 1980's. Hello, and wake up! Collectors would like at least a price listing estimate for what the ponies and other accessories are worth today. Knowing what they were worth then does us very little good now.
The one thing I do like about this book is the many photographs. Although they're not the best ( I've seen better on fan websites) it's still a bright and cheery book to flip through. I know it's almost impossible to have a complete price guide for the 21st century. However, I still would have liked it if Birge had tried harder to make one. All and all, this book is better for someone who is getting back into (or is new) when it comes to collecting MLP. I would like to give this book five stars but I can't. Some of the facts are wrong and some things are out of date. I would have liked it if Debra had done some more research.

Great Book!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
My Little Pony was one of the most beloved toys sold in the 80s. Now, many people still love my little ponies and collect them. This book helps pony collectors identify and price their ponies. The prices are pretty accurate and the pictures are beautiful. The pictures are ponies from Debra's own private collection of my little ponies. I think this book is very helpful for collecting ponies and I recommend it to all my little pony collectors and fans!

Not a good guide, poor editing, sad pictures, dissappointment,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
I bought this book almost a year ago to assist me with collecting G1 ponies. I have to admit, the book is full of helpful color pictures, but it is sad to see the ponies in such ratty condition. The worst part is that nearly every pony is stood on an upside down pony crib as a "stand" of sorts. The book seems somewhat disorganized. Also, parts of the book include phrases such as "I think it came with..." or "I'm not sure if..." This leads me to believe the book was not edited very well. The author also makes-up names for certain ponies, which is very annoying.
The price guide is worthless. She gives pricing by the condition of the pony, but never defines what those conditions will look like. Just look on Ebay if you want to see the market price of a paticular pony. I've seen many better MLP guides on the internet. If you can't resist buying this book, at least get a used one. It is definitely not worth the retail price. To conclude, the book is full of pictures and information, but don't rely on it as a single all knowing resource. 2 stars for a nice attempt, but it simply doesn't make the grade. Hope that helps.

A Commendable Effort, but Misleading for Collectors.,
By JCB (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
While Ms. Birge is to be commended on her effort with this book, the volume itself is more detrimental than helpful for collectors. The book covers only US releases, and some of the pictures are lackluster - next time, at least clean the ponies and fix their hair before they're photographed. The price guide is hopelessly inaccurate, and was out of date even when the book was first published. Finally, several ponies are incorrectly named - there was never a pony bride, for example, named "Dum Dum de Dum," but this guide claims that as a Hasbro-given name. The incorrect information and out of date pricing guide make this guide very misleading, both to collectors and to dealers. Why buy when several collector-owned websites offer more accuracy for free?

The prices are off and so are some of the accesssories...But....You cannot beat those beautiful clear pictures! I only wish she would write another book to cover the international MLP's.

Nice book,
By Rebecca Wetzel (Osceola, Indiana United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World of My Little Pony (R): An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Paperback)
I really love being able to look at clear photos of MLPs. The book is worth buying just for the photos. The prices are a bit lower than usual going prices, but no one could ever keep up with the changing values. Also, More often then not the accessories for the playsets are wrong, but everyone makes mistakes.
