Nice budget priced collection, February 2, 2010
This review is from: World Lounge: Caribbean Lounge (Audio CD)
This is a nice collection of old dance tunes from the 50's, featuring cha-chas, mambos and calypso. It is marred by the absolute absence of any information about the bands, one of my pet peeves. How difficult could it be to add that information to a CD collection, along with what year it was issued and maybe a little info about the artists?
One of the surprises here is a MARIMABA led band on "Ay Cosita Linda" and again on a very interesting version of the Perez Prado standard "Patricia". These two might probably come from Guatemala or southern Mexico, not necessarily the Caribbean, but close enough I suppose.
"Me Donkey Don't Want to" is a very cute and humorous calypso number backed by a flute-led band, similar in sound to Belafonte classics like "Banana boat song".
The record company filed bankruptsy and the new company has the lamest website imaginable, so no further info about the artists is likely. But the quality of the recordings is good, it's a nice collection of tunes from the Golden Age of Latin music, and the price is definitely right.
I associate LOUNGE music with a slower, more laid back type of music, so the title to this is misleading, since all of the numbers are full dance band type arrangements.
If you are looking for some great 50's dance music, then this will make a nice addition to your collection, as long as you aren't also looking for the historical information about who you are listening to!
