I love the world, but it smells.,
By Justin Hall (Culver City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World Map Vinyl Shower Curtain (Kitchen)
I've been wanting a world map shower curtain for some time - the shower is a nice contemplative place, and if you feel like turning around and opening your eyes, you can brush up on the placement of countries in Central Africa, or the arrangement of United States around the Mississippi river.
So this seemed a godsend. And it is wonderful. Except for two primary quibbles: 1. Odd choice of cities to label. For exmaple, in the United Kingdom, they've labelled London, and Sunderland. Yes - Sunderland. Not Edinburgh, for example, or Manchester. And in Japan, they labelled Tokyo, Sapporo and Sendai. No Osaka, no Kyoto. Maybe only island nations that drive on the left side of the road get this treatment on this curtain; either way I found it arbitrary. Somehow the cartoonish font they've chosen for the labels makes this seem like mockery. 2. This shower curtain smells. P-U. Strong scent of plastic. Wow. Aired out over a week now and the smell is still lingering. For the few days after I hung this World Map Shower Curtain, if I closed the door for some private bathroom meditation, I would be nearly asphyxiated. By the curtain. Quibbles aside, I enjoy my light political geography during bathing.

This shower curtain stinks,
By om "om" (nyc) - See all my reviews

Do NOT buy this curtain! It stinks. I mean, it LITERALLY stinks. Of what smells like very toxic chemicals. Google "vinyl shower curtain chemicals" (or something similar) in order to find out more. This curtain is poisonous, and you should certainly not buy it if you have kids (or, for that matter, if you care about your own health). Our curtain did NOT stop smelling, even after a week, and we threw it away.

I ordered this shower curtain thinking it was a world map printed on a white background. I guess I didn't read the description closely enough, because I was surprised to find it's completely see-through except for the countries. If you have little modesty, a forgiving spouse or no roommates, this is no problem.
The curtain did smell as if it had been treated with some chemical agent prior to shipping, but the intoxicatingly strong vinyl smell went away in just a couple days, and we have a very small bathroom. We enjoy looking at the map while taking showers. My girlfriend will often call out from the shower to ask if I know where Estonia or Franz Josef Land are. My only quibble is that the map appears on one side only. I imagine that's a logistical problem, as the opposite side would be the world laid out in reverse. Still, it's much more attractive on ine side than the other. If you're looking for a little geography during shower time or if you have kids who like learning best when its fun, I'd definitely recommend this product.

Learn geography while in the bathroom,
By
This review is from: World Map Vinyl Shower Curtain (Kitchen)
We have had one of these world map shower curtains for several years, and have learned a lot about the world while in the bathroom. Its fun.
We have scrubbed it as we can't bear to throw it away even tho its been torn and repaired and scrubbed many times. But just recently, thanks to Google, we have found where we can buy a new one. Now our geography lessons will be 'new'. Plastic smell goes away after a while, spray it both sides helps.

unacceptable - emits strong noxious odor,
By Marin guy (San Rafael, CA United States) - See all my reviews

This shower curtain emits a strong odor that has not gone away after airing it outside for weeks. My brother-in-law is a chemical engineering professor, and has informed me that the odors are volatile organic compounds that are unsafe for humans to breathe. Don't buy this curtain!

Poisonous - don't use if you have kids,

As others have stated, this curtain emits is a very strong odor for a while. I bought two of these, one about a year ago, and then another a few days ago to replace the previous one (we have very hard water).
The curtain is very nice for a morning review of various larger countries. It is a bit inaccurate in places, but that's okay in my view--it isn't like I'm using it to map my way out of the desert :) Okay, the problem, and why it gets one star: I noticed the odor with the first one for at least a week, but I figured that was the deal with plastic/vinyl curtains and let it go. The second one was in the house for one day; when I came home from work, the entire place smelled like the curtain. The difference is that now we're expecting a new addition to the family, so I was curious about the affect, if any, there might be on our unborn kid. A bit of googling later and the curtain was in the trash outside and the house was airing out. Don't take my word for it, though -- look it up yourself. Google things like "xylene isomers pvc," "new shower curtain smell," or "voc shower curtain" (no quotes). Needless to say, we will be purchasing a shower curtain made from a non-vinyl alternative. It would be nice to look at a world map whenever I take a shower, but I'd rather not poison myself in the process.

Best Most Useful Education Tool Ever,

How many hours a year does one spend in the shower? Count 10-20 minutes a day and multiply by 365= more than most can count on their fingers. Rather than spend that time with fish or polka dots this curtain will treat you to the likes of Moldova and the other geographical fruit salad treats of the Former USSR and other Eastern European regions. Canada and all the rest are there too but their borders haven't changed all that much since you last looked in the first grade. You can now study what country borders who and though I would not plan any expeditions with this map, it at least gives me an idea of what regions are where and even most of their capitals. If you need to see the map outside the tub, well, buy two. The fresh plastic oder disappears after awhile, I just checked, all gone though I think it lingered there for maybe two or three weeks. Aahhh, new shower curtain smell.

Interesting!,

It is fun and educational, also adds color to the bathroom.
The bad sides are: - strong chemical smell (one needs to air it outside for a day or two) - the curtain is very thin - i dont know how long it will serve (especially the area where holes are)

Best Shower Curtain EVER!
We love to travel and we often contemplate our next destination in the shower. It's easy to read and understanadble. Cons- Some of the cities they choose to highlight are questionable...and some are not even capitals. Also, it's kind of Cartooney, I'd like something a bit more detailed (more cities), and for a more adult crowd.

Love the shower curtain Map of the World. I was looking for something bright and colorful but not corny for our main/guest bathroom. We're not yet able to remodel the room but did add red cupboard knobs and I wanted a shower curtain that continued the brightness. Map of the World is perfect! At our son's wedding rehearsal dinner at our house, several friends and relatives told me what a great shower curtain we have. My sis wanted the link to order one for herself - she said she learned a few destinations on the map in 2 minutes!
