4.0 out of 5 stars Expansive
The World of Music has an expansive mission as it covers the world of music thru time. As such, it can be confusing at times. It feels like the Glossary was written by a different author and was not edited to sync with the text.

The Cd set is very helpful. But I wish that it was more expansive. It would be helpful to have the glossary tied to a CD of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept but inferior to previous editions
The previous editions were actually better. They contained a better variety of music, listening and topics. The new edition has blatant errors... ie page 60, the performer is misidentified as Huddie Ledbetter, it is Taj Mahal. Pat Metheny is misidentified as "Bob Metheny" p. 133. There are more errors and shortcomings but the worst part is the brevity. Can you...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept but inferior to previous editions, May 19, 2009
This review is from: The World of Music (Paperback)
The previous editions were actually better. They contained a better variety of music, listening and topics. The new edition has blatant errors... ie page 60, the performer is misidentified as Huddie Ledbetter, it is Taj Mahal. Pat Metheny is misidentified as "Bob Metheny" p. 133. There are more errors and shortcomings but the worst part is the brevity. Can you imagine the only listening examples of American popular music include Ethel Merman, Bob Wills, Ricky Skaggs, Gretchen Wilson, Little Richard, the Allman Bros, and Toni Braxton?

World music topics are arbitrary and spotty. There is no mention of Arabic music, Flamenco, and other important and influential traditions.

Only a passing reference is given to Latin Jazz, Jobim's music has been eliminated from the current edition of CDs even though his Girl from Ipanema is one of the greatest selling jazz records of all time. The French Gypsy Jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli is not even mentioned.

Overall, a great concept but needs augmentation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expansive, April 9, 2008

The Cd set is very helpful. But I wish that it was more expansive. It would be helpful to have the glossary tied to a CD of musical examples. There is a lot of material to cover in one semester and the students need all the help they can get to have all these different musical concepts gel and be retained.

I was very pleased with the condition of the book. It was just as the description said and it was much cheaper than if I had bought it at my school's bookstore!
I was very happy overall.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, January 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The World of Music (Paperback)
The one I purchased was supposed to be in "Very Good" condition, but upon receiving the book, I found it to be in an acceptable condition at best. The corners and cover were completely bent, and it's difficult to flip pages due to the poor page conditions. I'm very disappointed with my order.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible book and cd's, August 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The World of Music (Paperback)
Just a poorly written book that puts me to sleep. The music is bad and so is the writing. This book and cds is intended to be an intro to music set but it is beyond that in my opinion. This book focusses on ancient music and blows by music of the 20th century, which to me is what I identify with. Not for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, September 15, 2008

I ordered this new because I needed the 3 CD Discs for the class --- when I received the package it came without the discs. I called and found out that they did not have any more --- they still went ahead and sent the book and they did not send a note nor did they reduce the cost. I think that is ridiculous. I now have to return the item for credit.
