Format: Paperback
Though it only goes up to the late 1970s, around the time of Annie and Sweeney Todd, this
is a great book for the newcomer, because it includes all the golden age stuff, from George
M. Cohan and Victor Herbert on. It is lavishly illustrated (in black and white only) and very
dependable in its facts. You won't find any opinions here: Green was one of those writers who
leaves himself out of the narrative. Thus, the reader will learn about what all the famous writers
and stars were up to without any biases pro or con. It's a big book for a paperback, but it's
got everything you need to start out with in your first experiences with the musical, from Rodgers
and Hart to Rodgers and Hammerstein. In its own way, it's sort of a classic.
