A Vintage Recording,
By Karl Hess (Sandy, Utah United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World of Operetta (Audio CD)
These are vintage recordings taken from the Telefunken Library from 1929 to 1940. They are classic performances taken from a wide selection of Lehar's operettas. The artists perform with charm and affection and they were contemporaries of the composer. If you are a Lehar and operetta nut, you will find this collection enchanting. I purchased it for the Frasquita number "Hab' ein blaues Himmelbett" (My Little Nest of Heavenly Blue) which is one of my favorite Lehar numbers and somewhat hard to find. There is also a delightful Potpourri number which runs for 9 minutes and includes several favorites from different shows. If you are disturbed by the limited sound of these older recordings and want the full effect of high fidelity and stereophonic sound, you may want to choose from the more recent recordings highlighting Lehar. Some that I could recommend are Sony's ESSENTIAL OPERETTA, Capriccio's DEIN IST MEIN GANZES HERZ and Chandos's MARILYN HILL SMITH SINGS KALMAN AND LEHAR. These are all wonderful and a welcome addition to your operetta collection.

Franz Lehar's music is sublime. These iconic artists from the past were masters at presenting this type of operetta music. This CD is a treasure for lovers of the genre.
