Book Description

September 1, 2003
Every baseball fan has a favorite World Series memory, and this glorious celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Fall Classic is jam-packed with stories of unforgettable October moments, revealed in new and surprising ways, often in the words of those who were there watching or playing the games. What makes this book a standout-and tremendous fun-is its riveting immediacy. It is as if we were sitting in the stands at each game. The outspoken views of the author are certain to provoke the kind of heated discussions that are the lifeblood of every passionate baseball fan. (Watch the sparks fly when fans debate Wallace's choices for the 10 best Series...and the 10 worst!)

Relive the crushing 1919 Black Sox scandal, from the perspective of a disconsolate fan. Experience the frenzied excitement of Enos Slaughter's mad dash home in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series, as seen by the players involved. Listen in as Pete Hamill recalls the ecstasy of the Brooklyn Dodgers' long-awaited 1955 crown, and as Stephen King describes his own Series memories. Splendidly illustrated with thrilling action shots and Series ephemera, World Series: An Opinionated Chronicle captures the tension and catharsis, agony and joy, of events that come alive once again in this vivid retelling.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Author and editor of several baseball books (including The Autobiography of Baseball and The Baseball Anthology), Wallace here offers his personal fan's notes on the baseball century. Wallace evocatively narrates each series, noting the highlights and offering his personal rating: the 1907 series, for instance, ranked fifth on his 10 worst series list (with Cobb batting poorly, "it was one of the least competitive World Series on record"). A suitable layout makes this volume as easy to read as it is enjoyable to look at. The black-and-white photos capture the times, such as the one showing a Philadelphia street close to Shibe Park teaming with Athletics fans awaiting the game against the Giants; color photos (which don't appear regularly in the book until the history reaches the 1980s) depict such moments as the Twins celebrating their improbable 1991 win against the Atlanta Braves. Baseball fan Stephen King offers a warm epilogue that says: "I really believe that any World Series game a man or a woman can watch with their nine-year-old sons or daughters is a perfect game."

More About the Author

The best thing about being a writer is getting the chance to live inside the worlds I write about. For example, I spent so much time researching dinosaurs for my first book that I sometimes found myself looking over my shoulder for rogue Velociraptors. When I started writing about baseball history, I dreamed of sitting in the grandstands, watching old-time baseball deities in person. Finally, for my first novel, Diamond Ruby, I became immersed in New York City during one of the wildest eras in its history: the Roaring Twenties. Recreating that world allowed me to portray the great Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, and other real-life characters as I imagined them to be. Even more fun was the chance to place my teenage heroine, Ruby Lee Thomas, smack in the middle of a world bristling with gangsters, rum-runners, and hucksters. I loved following Ruby through those exciting, dangerous times--which is why I'm already writing her next adventure, set in Hollywood in 1927.
