This review is from: World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing (Audio CD)
This is volume three in Luka Bop's World Psychedelic Classics Series which easily bests the Shuggie Otis comp from a few years ago and equals the Os Mutantes one from 2000 ( I think).
The music and CD packaging is first class all the way. The CD is even enhanced to include a video/ film from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey. Though this may be a psych comp the music is very much a funk-jazz or soul jazz thing. The artists within borrowed from contemporary North American funk and Cuban rhythms popular in the late 60's and 70's and came up a sound that is best described as a rush to the head and body. If you have any love for African music or any kind of music please get this CD. Luka Bop has out done itself this time. Now can they release another Bollywood compilation. On a side note the Moussa Doumbia track is edited. What happened to the guitar solo, free jazz sax and the intense screaming that round out the song? I have an mp3 from the original record and it is life changing.

Funky For the Money,
This review is from: World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing (Audio CD)
If you like funk, or rock, or jazz, or just love good music you will like this CD. It is like a mix between James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Every song is amazing and they are all different. Sure you may not understand the language, but funk is international. Hands down worth the price.

I'm a dj in Hawaii and just happened to spot this treasure. It is bizarre and historically interesting as well. Unlike much other music i have heard- African beats mixed with the influence of early James Brown and psychedelia of the sixties..mind blowing!

If you like funk and you are tired of the same James Brown and P-Funk tracks, check out this album. It will be like nothing you've ever heard, certainly new and inventive. Be not mistaken though; there are some hard hitting, greasy funk tracks mixed in with a sound people would orientate with African rhythms. A very good album and worth the scratch. Also, somebody bashed teh Shuggie Otis comp- not sure how a person could like Love's a Real Thing and not like Shuggie Otis. Personally, I recommend the Shuggie Otis as well. But start of with this cd.

I won't say this is the best "world music" CD I've ever heard, or even the best Luaka Bop production, but it is very good and very unusual. Let's say certainly well above average - as are the lengths of many of the songs. The music is hard to compare to anything else... maybe psychedelic reggae? Maybe not. Anyway, if you're broad-minded, musically speaking, chances are you'll like it, so buy it.

This is a great album. I bought the first week it came out and still have not tired of it a year and a half later. Get it! You will put its songs on mix tapes and people will think you're awesome for having found these rare but outstanding songs!

Africa Like You've Never Heard It Before,

This compilation contains some magnificent music. Forget about the notes which often are inaccurate and the marketing of these songs as psychedelia which most of them are not. There is great variety here and not a weak track. Moreover, most of the music would be hard to find elsewhere. It captures a time and a place perfectly yet sounds completely contemporary. Get buzzed and get into the fuzz.

Makes you want to dance. A great spread of some of the best West African musicians of the sixties and seventies. Get this if you like funk, soul and bass lines
