One of the best songs ever recorded.,

This review is from: Mad World Pt.1 (Audio CD)
I loved the original Tears for Fears song, but this version blows it - and just about any other remake of practically any song - out of the water. Haunting, beautiful, and sung to perfection by Gary Jules, you do not need to see "Donnie Darko" to appreciate its impact. That said, however, to hear it during the final scene of that film simply transcends what the film experience can be. Magnificent. I've listened to it well over 1000 times and it has yet to grow stale.

That's Where I Heard It,

M. Harris...thank you!!
I heard this song on the radio this morning and have been going crazy trying to figure out where I heard it. I have seen Donnie Darko--but that was a few years ago. So, I knew it wasn't there....now I remember seeing it on Cold Case not too long ago. I can remember that during that part of the episode, I was mesmerized by it. It was probably one of the best Cold Case episodes I've ever watched because of that song--although I cannot remember what was happening at the time besides the fact that it was at the end after the case had been solved...someone help me here?!? (similar impact on me as that of an episode of Miami Vice that I remember to this day when Brothers in Arms was playing while they uncovered a dead body behind a walll!!) Mad World is one of the most beautiful AND haunting songs I've ever heard!! For those people who really LOVE music and love the emotions it stirs in you...listen to it...you can't help but be moved. I can't wait to get a copy!!

Stuck in My Mind,

I first heard this song on Cold Case last year and it has haunted me ever since! I had tried just about everything to find out the name and singer of the song (all I could do was hum the tune and I knew a few of the words) and finally my sister suggested I go to the internet. I saw Donnie Darko a few years ago, but the song did not have any relevance then, so, I will be renting the DVD this weekend. I love this song and will be purchasing the CD.

If you have (or have ever had) feelings, I don't see how you could not be fascinated and captivated by this incredibly haunting and sensitive recording. I've read that this original version was actually only intended as a demo, but the person with final say over the music for the movie wanted the song just as it was! Good choice. Well done, Michael & Gary, well done.

This song is hauntingly beautiful and full of everyday conclusions to life itself - no matter who you are or where you live.

Mad World best Christmas Single,

When I first heard the single Mad World by Gary Jules it wasn't during the christmas charts but back in 2002 when it featured on Episode 11 - "Visage" in the series Smallville. It was such an emotional scene involving the death of one of the shows character and when the haunting piano lyrics began to play I was in love with the song and was surprised to hear it again after so long, being aired on the radio. Im so glad that Gary Jules has been noticed and hope to hear alot more from him and look forward to hearing his new album.

I heard this version of the song a while ago and loved it, but could never remember what it was. I saw Donnie Darko for the first time a few Days ago and I havn't been able to stop listening to this song. It is so haunting, Gary Jules's voice adds to that whole effect, the impact is made even stronger by the final scene of the movie and the music video, however, neither are necessary for the song.

I must have originally heard "Mad World" way back when Donnie Darko was out, but since I didn't see the movie, I never connected. Recently saw CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode "Room Service" where it was played at the end (and also the beginning?) of the episode. The other picture was Cold Case episode "Forever Blue". I'd been hunting for this song ever since, and finally found an audio clip.
One of the readers is right, it is much better than the Tears For Fears version (a really great group, by the way). I actually thought Gary Jules version was the original, and made back some period in the 60's; it has that era's same musical quality (like Jefferson Airplane's "Ask Alice").

It's better than the original!!
Conisdering I'm rarely a fan of remakes, this is a monumental comment for me to make. Fact of the matter is, as emotionally impacting as this song was written to be, Tears for Fears didn't get the message across so very well with the composition of their music. This has always been one of my all-time-favorite Tears for Fears songs, as well, but in hearing this cover, I was more blown away. The piano and slower tempo really make you feel the bitter-sweet message of the song. One thing that always pissed me off about the Tears for Fears version, were the early synthesized sounds they incorporated at a crutially emotional point... just ruins it... quite literally makes me laugh actually! So yes, this is your better bet of the two versions! GO OUT AND BUY IT TODAY!!! *corny salesman smile*

After watching Donnie Darko (several times) I ordered MAD WORLD by Michael Andrews - Gary Jules and really love this music. It sticks in your head and sorta makes everyday problems seem less important or something! I highly recommend this for sure. Believe me I have bought alot worse :)
